I had a similar problem with a box I purchased from someone off Kijiji. When I plugged it in the first time, it also did a firmware install (counting down from 600). But I also could not tune any SDV channels. Tech came and told me it was the box. I got my money back luckily and got a new one from Best Buy which worked just fine.

Hi Guys,
I have searched the forum for my issue but no luck. I purchased a used 8300hd from another Rogers customer. I got it authorized ok on my account but it does not tune on demand or any sdv channels. A Rogers tech visited & said it was because the box did not have an IP address. I called Rogers tech support but they weren't much help, offering to send out another tech guy. Does anyone know how to obtain an IP address. |

If it is authorized and can access your other channels, I'm pretty sure that the issue with your signal is something upstream (like an improper splitter) blocking the return signal from your STB. Temporarily remove any splitters, etc. See the following FAQ on the topic - also mentioned in post 1 of this thread:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...39#post1166439 I have no idea why the first tech wouldn't have found this issue - perhaps he was in a rush or poorly trained. I have had the occasional tech who didn't even know what SDV is or how it worked! Was it a Rogers truck or a sub-contractor? If it turns out that I'm right, you should report the tech as incompetent.

When I first got digital cable, SDV and ROD didn't work for me because there was a 54 MHz high pass filter on my cable. Once the tech removed that, everything worked fine.
The filter blocks the return path below 40 MHz. Without a return path, the set top box has no way to communicate with the headend. |

This happened to me once with a box I purchased second hand from someone. It was the same, it couldn't tune to anything SDV or On demand. Rogers came in, checked the signal and said the box itself was diffective. I ended up returning the box and getting my money back and purchased a new one which worked fine.

I had the exact same issue with my 8300 HD, the box was faulty, had it replaced and the SDV and VOD worked fine after that.

Thanks for the replys. To fill you in a bit, I had a Sd 8000 on that connection and a another 8300 upstairs, both off the same splitter. They both could tune all channels plus OD. Both pvr's listed an ip address on page 6 of the diagnostics screen. The new box has a 1tb wd10-eads upgrade, not sure which adapter was used. Under the IP address, it says unavailable. The tech put an amplifier on the incoming cable and it has boosted the signal quite a bit. I have read through the sdv thread and there was mention of the ip address. InMontrel suggested to call Rogers, post #119, and ask them to set the box to bidi mode. I talked to 3 different Rogers reps, but all seemed bewildered, and didn't suggest anything about bidi mode. Thanks in advance.

An amp will boost an incoming signal, but does nothing for the outgoing (return) signal which needs to go to the headend or node for VOD/SDV. I cannot comment on the IP, however, it sounds like you need to escalate at Rogers and perhaps try removing splitters to see if there is a difference since it appears the signal is not going out from the new STB. Just because something worked previously doesn't mean it'll work with the new box, which may have a slightly different signal, or perhaps when it was connected, something happened to the connection. Have you tried another STB at the location of the problem STB?

57, to answer your previous question, yes it was a Rogers tech. and yes everything was working on that connection previously plus I switched my 8300's and the problem followed the new box. I think it is the box, but what I was driving at is how to get an IP address for the new box and see if that fixes the problems, also the amp was put in because of pixelating, sound dropouts and unable to access OD. Here's an update on my SDV issue. I took the box to my local cable shop and asked to speak to a tech. He hooked the box up to a TV they have at the front desk and it picked up an IP right away and OD and sdv channels all worked. I thanked him profusely and went home. I hooked it up to my main TV and lo and behold everything worked At first it said IP unavailable, page 4 by the way, not 6, but a while later I checked back and it had obtained an IP address. Don't have a clue what happened but hoping it continues to work O.K. Thanks to those who replied, much appreciated. Bill

Thanks for the feedback. It's very odd, but perhaps another cold reboot finally did the trick. Since you say you moved the box around, I assume that it had some cold reboots before.

Yes it was rebooted several times and moved from upstairs to downstairs. My other 8300 has never had any problem tuning the switched channels so I didn't think it was the cable. Anyway the new box has been working OK for a couple of days now. I'm not 100% convinced that the IP address had anything to do with this problem, but that's what the tech told me. I asked how to get an address but all he could suggest was taking the box for repair, not much help really. Bill
