Default 6GB Data w/my 10. Good deal, Limited Time

Just thought I'd share as it's one of the better plans they've offered in a while, and it's apparently only available until August 8th:

6 GB of data
Unlimited Canada-wide MY10 calling
Unlimited messaging
Unlimited 6PM evening & weekend calling
200 weekday minutes
All on Canada's first LTE network

I was on the exact same plan with 1GB data, and thought that was a good deal.

Not a ton of minutes, but with MY10, it's as good as unlimited for someone like me.

The one glaring gap is that they still charge an obscene amount for long distance outside a paltry ten numbers.

You see, long distance fees dont really exist, save for some far flung termination fees in third world countries. It's as fake as the System Access Fee!

And that is why VoIP or Skype with the 6GB is key.

I signed up for this plan. It saves me $3.45 per month, before taxes. I go from 100 to 200 week day minutes, 1000 to unlimited evenings and weekends and also pick up texting and those 10 unlimited long distance numbers. My data stays the same at 6 GB. After my 15% bundling discount, my bill will be $51/month + tax.

With traditional dial up long distance, you're paying for exclusive use of bandwidth over the distance. The further you go, the greater the cost of the physical plant. While these costs are nowhere near what they used to be, they're still real. VoIP uses a different charging method and so can be cheaper over your data plan than even using your cell phone minutes for local calls. However, even cell phone calls will be moving exclusively to VoIP as it is supposed to be the primary voice method for LTE and 4G phones.

I switched as well for the same reason. CID and VM are still extra, but for me it's a better value to go this route.

I hardly ever talk on my device. It's mainly for texting and data consumption. This a great pan for me.

One other point, LTE is now the same price as 3G. Previously, it was significantly more expensive.

Would it be important to buy an LTE phone for this plan or is an iPhone 4S a good phone for this plan?

No, All LTE plans are backwards compatible with non LTE phones. If you choose to buy an LTE phone down the road, this plan will enable LTE speeds on that phone in the future.

I tried to change my plan to this but they said that I am stuck with a $30/month 1GB plan for another 12 months as I got my iPhone4 in Aug 2010. Is there any way to get this waived? Or should I wait until Sep and threaten to leave at that time unless they waive this fee and let me upgrade to an iPhone5.

A couple questions for the experts out there.

Is there a difference between an LTE SIM card and a regular SIM card? Just wondering if I keep my old SIM card will I still be getting LTE speeds?

Is tethering (or using as a personal hotspot) allowed with this plan?

I'm not aware of a difference in cards, as all they do is identify the phone tied to the account. When I got my smart phone, I just moved the SIM from my GSM phone and it worked fine. I expect that when I get around to getting a LTE phone it would just be a matter of moving the SIM over, as my account is now LTE ready.

As far as I know, you do need an LTE SIM to connect to the LTE network. Rogers did introduce new SIM cards when they launched the LTE network.

Rep was just clueless. Call back and try again.

LTE sims are not required for LTE phones per se, but you won't get LTE speeds unless you have an LTE sim card, LTE plan and an LTE phone.

I notice on one the valu-pak addons for the Samsung S3 we just signed up for this plan that it says "Mini-voice message and Call Display (Number Only)". Does anyone know what this means, so names won't show up--only a number?

that is correct. mini voicemail also means you can only store up to 3 voice messages that are 3 minutes in length.
