My question is, if I were to put a new, more efficient furnace in, is there a type or brand that I could feel very confident about running unattended for up to 3 weeks at a time? I've never had any trouble with the old one and I've heard that sometimes the electronics or sensors can cause grief with newer furnaces. I would hate to go to the cottage and discover everything frozen and burst because the furnace went out two weeks prior.
All modern furnaces pretty much have the same parts - ignition components and ventor motors are the most prone to failure. There are no gaurantees.

If the gas bills aren't bad, there's no reason to replace it; the older natural draft furnaces can last 20-30 years.

The only brand I could recommend over the rest is Rheem - they use spark ignition instead of hot surface ignitors. (HSIs are probably the most common failure point)

Hi Michael,
We recently installed a new furnace - approximately 6 months ago, and very happy with that - excellent quality and very quiet. The furnace company is Goodman - I decided to go with it because my neighbors recommended it - their furnace is 5 years old and they never had any problems with it.
I got it for a very good price- something about 1800' plus it was installed for free.

That really sounds too good to be true unless you got a (old stock) mid efficiency unit or whoever you bought it from won't be around to service it.

Most of the units recommended on this board have two stages of heat and cost $3-$5k+ properly installed.

My neighbour was quoted $10,300 for a new furnace and air conditioner by Direct Energy. He signed on (still has 10 days to back out) but then found much cheaper quote by a company called cozyworld. $7,500. The furnace is Armana model GMVC950905 CX and Armana A/C SSX140421

My questions are what is a fair price for installation of those units and anyone have experience with cozyworld?

Warranty offered by cozyworld is slightly better than Direct Energy

Thanks

You were quoted Amana branded goodman equipment.

The a/c size is 3.5 tons which requires a lot of airflow, yet the standard filter size is 16x25; if you want to use pleated filters, ask about a 4-5" media filter.

I believe that the better Amana furnaces (AMVC95) have stainless steel heat exchangers. (possibly better cabinet)

The DE quote was probably for Trane equipment; nevertheless, $10k is too much for a furnace and a/c unless major duct alterations are required.

Brand is not very important compared to quality of installation, proper sizing, and commissioning.

Ask DE for a Amana quote they sell that too. it will be higher im sure though.

Thanks guys,

DE quote says Amana. Cozyworld quote says Goodman. Model #s identical on both so I assume equipment is the same?
Cozyworld warranty is 10yr parts and labour
DE warranty is 10yr parts 5 yr labour

Be sure to get the factory 10 year labour warranty which can be honored by anyone who deals with goodman/amana.
