CRT rear projection 48hz? - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

I have a hitachi 51uwx20b CRT rear projection. My question is is it safe to set a custom resolution over dvi to run it at 48hz for blurays?
I've used CRT monitors in the past and they all supported various refresh rates so I found it odd that they weren't available on this tv, is it a limitation of dvi?
I also found it odd that these tvs use Dvi digital as their pc input, wouldn't it make more sense to use VGA as crt's are analog?
