Very strong indication there is a rip in the fabric of time, get ready for bouts of deja vu. |

The Mrs and I saw the movie last night, she liked it somewhat and is a trek fan as I am. I liked it for what it was intended to be, a reboot. The main story was good and the characters were very entertaining, albeit a little close to being a parody at times. We both loved the kobyashi maru scenes, they were excellent. I thought the cast for the bridge crew was great except Chekov, the kid playing him seemed like an effeminate Howdy Doody/Dougie Houser crossbreed. Not a bad movie overall but it did remind me of Starship Troopers in some ways. I'll pick up the bluray when it's on sale for around 20 bucks.

Well, looks like I'm getting into this Star Trek 2009 movie discussion a little late, but I just joined the forum recently - and noticed the thread - so here goes. Liked the movie overall. Pretty good. It does not have the magic of the original, but I think that will be difficult for anyone to match. I thought McCoy seemed the most realistic character. Uhura too. I had trouble with Kirk. Hard to believe he was such a wild undisciplined kid in his youth - and yet became a starship captain with the discipline, smarts, and nerves of steel of James T. Kirk (Shatner) of the original series. Others I spoke with had some trouble with the story line, here and there- about how the crew came to get in charge of the starship in this movie - but hey, it's science fiction. I had some difficulty believeing that any Romulans, coming back in time from the future, would be such terrorists - destroying whole planets. Romulans, from the other series, seem to be much more logical, cool minded, calculating, low key, and much more disciplined than this. It just does not seem their style. Remember, they're supposed to be close relatives of Vulcans. I think Romulans would find other less destructive methods to achieve their goals. Or rather accept their fate and live bravely in this time rather than destroy whole planets. Oh well ... but they did the same thing with the Klingons - Klingons seemed to be the arch enemies of the Federation in the original series ...dirty scoundrels ... and then they gave them all this honour and made them like allies / friends of the Federation in Star Trek the Next Generation - TNG, even serving on each other's ships. The action throughout the movie was very good. But I am also a fan of great story lines. The original series had some great interesting, thrilling stories, themes, concepts, and entertainment and laughs along the way. I would love to see more emphasis on story I guess. Not complex time travel stuff that warps your mind and gives you a headach trying to figure it out ... but rather just good thrilling, story that wow's and makes you think - long after you've seen the movie or episode... the original series definitely had that. Hmmm. Anyway ... I could be wrong ...just some personal thoughts and opinions.

I didn't care for this movie. I hated how the crew serve together immediately on the Enterprise fresh from the academy. After Mission impossible 3 and now this, I will know to stay away from this director's films. A big, dumb action movie IMO.

Jokedr, I know what you're saying but it would likely take a half dozen movies to show us realistically how so many of our favourite characters could end up on the same starship. The difference in their ages as portrayed in the original series even makes it unlkely that they would all have been cadets at the academy at the same time. I just treat this as artistic licence and go from there.
Frankly I had the same problem with the last scene in Star Trek VI. How could Chekov be old enough to retire? He was clearly a youngster compared to Kirk and Spock. |

You're always old enough to retire...as long as you have enough money put away to cover your future expenses.

Yeah, why do you have to be 'old' to retire? I retired at the age of 33 - surely they can retire at any age in the 23rd century as well.

just saw this flick from a 720p bootleg..... I've got it on order from Indigo.
Wow. I enjoyed it, and am glad for the reboot, even if it's due to 'time travel'. I loved that 'sonar sound' from the TOS at the begining of the movie. I was a fan of ST:TNG from high school days, and all the later ST TV series, as well as the motion picture films from both the TOS and TNG. Scotty and McCoy had some classic lines which made me smile. P

Picked it up on BD and watched it for the first time and for the most part I liked it. Looks amazing on the HD set.
I thought I was going to hate the CGI in this movie but it actually looks really good except the one scene where Kirk is on his motorcycle watching the Enterprise being constructed on earth, looked pretty crappy to me. |

I saw it in the theatres when it was first released, and while I liked it, it felt more than a little contrived. It made me yearn more for the philosophical ponderings of Star Trek. It just felt too hyper for me to love it.
They did get the friendships done correctly, especially Kirk and Bones, and I did really like Scotty. Only wished he had been in it more. Really wished Nero's motivations were explained more. As it was, it was a guy looking for revenge; a revenge we didn't really know beyond Romulus getting destroyed and a motive for his wanting to kill Spock. More about this in a minute. The whole hobus star system going nova? Please... No star's going to go nova that quickly. They'd have plenty of time to evacuate. And the red matter? Felt like something out of a comic book, honestly. So, while it was Star Trek, it didn't really feel like Star Trek. As for comic books, a friend of mine lent me the Countdown comic after we had seen the movie together, and I was peeved. I was peeved at J.J Abrams, because the things in this comic book weren't just for the die hard Star Trek fan, but things that made it easier to understand why things happened; things that should have been in the movie in the first place and would ironically have helped make more sense for the casual viewer and made the experience more enjoyable overall. So, these things seemed relegated to comic book status, things like the explanation for Nero's anger and motivation. Nero had a wife on Romulus, and she was pregnant with a child. He had been making observations about the hobus star system and believed it to be a problem and so brought up the issue with the council. The council wouldn't listen to him. He tried multiple times to get their attention and finally decided to take the issue into his own hands. He knew the Vulcans were working with red matter and so he tasked Spock for help. At this point, Nero's actually a family man with some sense in him. Not the same Nero you see on the screen. You see compassion for him in the comic. He's off with Spock when Romulus gets destroyed, and becomes grief stricken for his wife's death, and it's at this point that he blames it all on Spock. Then he gets tattoo'd like you see him in the movie, which is explained as a Romulan grieving ritual, his whole crew being tattoo'd as well due to the destruction of Romulus, and then he goes rogue with all sense having escaped him due to his grief. Spock escapes and well... I can kind of see why that was left out, but it would have added more depth to his motivations instead of just seeing him like a guy out for revenge. Wrath of Kahn worked because we knew Kirk and Kahn's history, and we knew his motivations for revenge. He didn't suddenly appear and say, "Look at me, I'm Khan! I want revenge for something that happened offscreen in a comic book! Why look at me like that, you're supposed to care!" |
