Question New Blue Ray Players HDMI1.4 with 1.3HDMI receivers

I have a Yamaha RX-V663, I guess 3 years old which has 1.3 HDMI ports. I haven't yet gone to a blue ray player because of price of blue rays and not much availability for quite awhile at our local small town video rental place. But DVD player finally died so want to get a blue ray player. I was told by a FS home theatre guy that if my receiver was 1.3HDMI, I couldn't run HDMI to my receiver because all the blue ray players are 1.4 HDMI...even the non-3D models. (No, I do not have nor want a 3D tv). The only way I could make it work is to run my blue ray HDMI directly to the tv for video and an optical cable to the receiver for sound. I really do NOT want to have to do that for a few reasons but I can't believe 1.4HDMI blue ray players are not backwards comptable with receivers with 1.3. Walked next door to BB, really young guy and didn't seem overly knowledgeable and didn't think it would be a problem. Called 2001 where I got the receiver and guy had no idea but didn't think it would be a problem...but the FS guy seemed pretty sure of myself.

I suppose I can probably find an older model Blueray on ebay or something that has a 1.3 hdmi so it would work, but obviously not ideal. I was looking at a Sony 480 but I'm not fussy...it was just a good deal on a unit that got a pretty decent rating.

Can someone clarify this for me....is the FS guy out to lunch?

Short answer: Yes.

From HDMI.org:

Are HDMI 1.4 devices going to be backwards-compatible with older HDMI (v.1.0 - 1.3) devices?
Yes, devices built to the HDMI 1.4 specification will be fully backwards-compatible with existing HDMI devices and their features.
Oh, and it's "Blu-ray".

As far as I know, 1.4 is only required for 3D.

You may lose some of the newer HDMI features with your setup (e.g. HDMI Control, ARC etc.) but the picture and audio (both lossless formats) should work fine. I think the guy was just trying to upsell you to a new receiver. He may be doing this on his own or it may be store policy. In either case I would politely complain to the store manager and if necessary to the head office.

Default Thanks for the help!

Thanks guys. It just didn't make sense to me...the player I want to buy just happens to be a 3D Sony bdp-s480...decent reviews and good clearance price. Other non-3D models are also 1.4...I thought 1.4 was just for the 3D but I guess it does a couple of other things.

Thing is, the guy did nothing at all about trying to sell me a new AV receiver...I just got finished buying a new TV from him for my mother-in-law and he was saying that if my AV receiver was only 3 years old it is likely 1.4hdmi anyhow but if not I had a problem..if it was an upsell, it was a pretty low key one. He didn't try to push extended warranty on me...he asked, I said no, he moved on. And he didn't try to sell me pricey cables.

In my experience, sales people almost never believe customers unless proof is provided (even then they will stick to their beliefs). A talk to a manager need not ruin him, but may serve to educate him (he will believe his manager before he believes a customer).

@bsdavid:

is your TV 3D capable? are you going to use 3D movies?

in my personal experience with Pioneer BDP-53FD, Panasonic BDT-500, Sony BDP-S790 (US model), I still can use my HDMI 1.3 receiver as a switcher as long as I disable the 3D option on the blu-ray player's setup and also disable HDMI CEC.

PS: HDMI 1.4 literally covers HDMI 1.2, 1.3, and newer standards. HDMI 1.4 have too many variants such as 1.4 (only) -- which is equivalent to HDMI 1.2; 1.4 High Speed/3D (equivalent to 1.3 High Speed -- in fact you can use HDMI 1.3 High Speed cable to pass 3D signal with no problem), 1.4 with ARC, 1.4 with Ethernet.
