By the way, their is no more linkage rules for Multicultural channels, so you don't have to purchase OTN to get non-Canadian multicultural channels. I'm not sure when the new rules actually kick-in. These IPTV boxes are starting to have an effect on the bottom line at Rogers and Bell. I have a friend with a Chinese IPTV service and Bell/Rogers can't even compete with what he gets for $20/month.
With Bell Fibe TV adding ethnic services like there's no tomorrow expect these to show up with in the next 2 or 3 months. I just wish Bell Fibe would remap their ethnic services that they have in the 600's,700's & 800's into the 2000's where they have other ethnic services and group them in the proper ethnic grouping of the Langue?
Did you actually read the information in the link you provided or only see the bolded letters of "denied"?
Consequently, the issuance of a licence for this service is unnecessary in light of the new exemption order and the Commission’s determinations to eliminate the genre exclusivity policy and to no longer enforce nature of service requirements as set out in Broadcasting Regulatory Policy
I can't stand ATN's Torontocentric nature of "Canadian" programming or "local" ads. I won't even SUB to a channel they run, or even add inserts into [example: Sony SET Asia]. If somebody tells me "it's because Toronto has the biggest ethnic population", I'll scream! Ignores major cities like Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver, etc. I'd go FTA or even greymarket US sat before I appease ATN.
The Cult Movie Network has decided to turn in their Category B licence and continue to operate as an exempt undertaking since they have less than 200,000 subscribers. They are also on MTS as channel 599, but I'm not sure if that is a linear channel since I've never subscribed. You can also subscribe to the channel online at http://www.cultmovienetwork.com.
The CRTC added The Africa Channel to the List of non-Canadian programming services and stations. Bell Canada is the Canadian sponsor of the English-language service which originates from the United States.
I can't comment on Bell Sat, but expect to see this channel on Bell Fibe in the next 2-3 months as it appears they seem to add 99% of the ethnic services approved to their line up.(Bell Fibe)
Rogers just added something called TravelXP HD and Record, some non-English stuff. Another waste. Almost anything you could ever want is available for free now streaming online. 1000's of channels.
Yes that's true, but I think a lot of these ethnic services are more or less geared towards those of 'older generation" not quite got the 'graspe' of the Steaming side of viewing tv. Its more for those 1St generation(grandparents or parents from non english/french speaking countries) that mainly watch these services? I'm not sure of the sub rates to these channels is, but I'm guessing that most aren't individuals that are born here from variouis ethnic groups, that watch these services, but more likely their parents or grandparents that do.
Ya, but the older generation, the one just ahead of mine are less willing to fork out $$$ for extra tv services especially above the basic tier. I don't think multi cultural programming is as profitable as it used to be, since their are other cheaper OTT IPTV services available for many cultures now, and much of it is free if you know where and how to find it.
Here's a thought if they added channels that people liked, subscribed to and actually watched they wouldn't have to keep adding channels that are so geared to a specific group that they fail and get revamped or cancelled every couple of years.
^ and I take the other opinion. If they properly "narrow-cast" -- target the channel to people with particular interests, much like magazine's do -- they could charge a premium and the channel could be a success. That means having compelling programming the stays within the genre, that is not available elsewhere (streaming for free for example), and is not spread across a number of other channels. But as thenewdc points out, that is not what is happening.
Problem is the landscape for multi-cultural programming has changed dramatically over the last few years. This type of programming use to be a license to print money. Now with multi-cultural unlicensed over the top services available at little to no cost, this is not the case anymore. Who would want to pay ridiculous high prices to their ISP for 1 or 2 multi-cultural channels nowadays when they have many options to choose from. If Bell and Rogers were smart they should launch something like Dish World IPTV and provide low cost programming with an app across multiple platforms currently available, and since it would be OTT their would be no licensing necessary.
This doesn't make any sense. Corus doesn't have any less channels than they did before so this must mean that Corus Entertainment had a license for Disney Channel specifically. I wonder if they are operating under exempt status right now.
