Default Shaw Cancellation Policies

I currently have all three service with Shaw (TV, Internet and Phone) but moving to Telus (also for all three services) next week.

My Shaw billing is from 19th to 18th and Shaw requires a 30 day cancellation policy. However Telus won't come until 23-24 July.

Telus said they will only transfer the home phone, and I will have to cancel TV and Internet with Shaw myself.

Since Shaw requires a 30 day notice, I guess I will have to cancel on the 19th? Does that mean I won't have TV and Internet for 4-5 days until Telus installs next week?

Or am I getting it wrong? Can I call Shaw and ask them to cancel on the same day Telus is installing next week without any additional charges? What I am asking is does Shaw only require that I let them know 30 days before the billing cycle ends or from the day the service is actually cut?

Can I call them now (and therefore be within the 30 day notice) and tell them to cancel next week? Or will they charge for an additional month?

Thanks.

Your best bet is to call Shaw and ask...

I believe Shaw will charge you for service for 30 days from the time you call them to request cancellation of your service, regardless of whether you use the services or not during the 30 day period following your call.

As already suggested, call Shaw to get the actual answer. The sooner you call, the less it will cost you in the long run if your Telus install is next week. You might want to reschedule your Telus hookup so as to not waste the money Shaw is going to charge you.

The CRTC rules are that a provider can't charge for more than 30 days from the date notice is given, no matter what your billing cycle is. The last time I canceled Shaw, they didn't require any notice at all, but they can legally require 30 days.

As mentioned, your best bet is to call Shaw ASAP and schedule your cancellation date for the date you want. I usually allow a day or 2 overlap, just in case something goes wrong with the installation or scheduling, etc.

Remember, don't cancel your phone. Otherwise you won't be able to transfer the number to Telus. You may end up paying for phone until the end until your billing cycle.

Talked to Shaw. I had already paid for my services until mid-August, and my Telus install is next week. They said just bring the modem and the TV box to the Shaw office and services will be cancelled on that date only. Plan to return their stuff a few days after Telus install is complete.

Since I didn't want to cancel phone, they put me on a 34.95 package. Is this normal? I won't have to pay for this right? Since I already paid for all 3 Shaw services until mid-August, I assume this new phone package will actually start after that (mid-August-mid September)? But Telus would have transferred the number by then, correct?

I've never had Shaw phone so I don't have any personal experience, but I don't think you would have to pay anything after the current bill. Perhaps someone with experience with canceling Shaw phone can chime in.

$34.95 is their unbundled price for Home Phone Basic. They probably cancelled your TV and internet right away, and will charge you $34.95/mo for the few days between when you cancelled your TV/internet and when Telus ports over your phone number. This will likely result in a net credit being applied to your account.

Just make sure your Shaw services don't get cancelled until after telus installs their services. I've had bad luck with telus installs/upgrades.

If you have to give shaw 30 days notice make sure the cancellation date is a week after telus (it's probably worth the extra week of fees).

I do not see why not though I am just a customer like you.

If my $9/month HBO/MC package is any indication it is already set up to be cancel after the 6 months is up. I had to request that specifically but they "made a note" on my account. I'll probably still call to confirm closer to that date but I see no reason your situation should be treated any different.

Again, I'm just a paying shlub like you and this is just my assumption.

i wonder if i can get Shaw to waive the 30 day period when i explain why i'm ending my service with them.
They refused to fix constant sound drop outs of over a 100 a day and told me if i didn't like it i could always go to Telus so i finally am, so thanks for the many many years of crap service Shaw good riddence
