Can I watch CBC live on the web?Dont see it on CBC.ca.With CBC shutting down OTA you would think they would have this available.

Installed that player but wont work and its not from CBC and would be have ads.

They wouldn't. They need to get different rights for online, for the content they buy, and to protect the content they own so they can sell it abroad.

Plus it would cost them.

They want you to subscribe to a BDU.

Why are they any different than the BBC which streams all of its channels live on the internet, provided you are located in the UK? The BBC has the same rights issues, only moreso since they resell more content than the CBC does and they are happy with using blocking based on your IP address, which is easy for non-UK folks to get around with a VPN or a service like Unblockus.

1: The BBC is well funded, compared to the CBC. They also have certain clout

2: The BBC wants to be innovative. The CBC doesn't really, at least anymore, or they would have found some way to not throw away rural viewers.

3: The BBC makes, or owns the primary copyright to nearly everything they air, so can do what they please. The CBC has, or likes to, buy outside content, and with that are limited to broadcast.

Lastly, the "culture" of TV is rather different in the UK , both because they have the license fee, plus are on literal island of English programming, rather than trying to be the media behemoth to the South.

I don't see why clout makes a difference for CBC's own content, which is the bulk of their schedule. Tonight's schedule from 8-12 is: Dragon's Den, Arctic Air, The National and Strombo, all CBC original programming.

I don't think it would be hard for them to get online Canadian live broadcast rights when they buy Canadian rights for TV shows - these seem to generally be included when you buy Canadian TV rights for shows as you can see from other Canadian network sites.

It looks like these shows are actually available for streaming on the web, including a back catalogue of shows. The National is also streamed although it may be on a bit late.

And they do stream HNIC live, including out of market games.

So why not just stream the shows that you want when you want, rather than be subject to the whims of the CBC's schedule?

I think it is clear that the federal government wants to starve and gut the CBC in order to support private broadcasters. I don't expect to see much innovation at CBC as long as that orientation is maintained.

You know the expression "It's hard to remember that your original priority was to drain the swamp when you are up to your ass in alligators."?

I think there is a similar mindset at CBC these days. When you are trying to protect what little remains of public broadcasting, don't spend your limited resources and efforts on expansion.
