Just curious about what other members have encountered in terms of proper Closed Captioning from OTA DTV stations.
I just read this article: Commission issues reminder of closed captioning obligations I then started checking out all my OTA stations (Buffalo/GTA) and no CC's are showing up. American or Canadian. I'm using a Bell 9242 for this quick and incomplete test. My SIR-T451 is currently disconnected so I could not determine if it was a tuner issue. I know that CC works on the Bell 9242 for stations received via satellite reception. If this is a receiver issue, is it possible that Bell is in violation of any CRTC regulations? I wouldn't think they could be allowed to disable CC handling via a firmware update etc. The 9242 does not handle PSIP data. cheers |

Never mind.
I turned off the receiver overnight and CC is working correctly this morning. I had left CC enabled in the menu. It is weird because turning off the 9242 does not actually power down the unit. cheers. |

Also just an anecdotal item on this topic:
mrs. stampeder's mom, like many seniors, requires closed captioning to augment her hearing and has remarked that the CC'ing via DTV is formated more clearly and contains fewer speed-related glitches than the CC'ing found on analogue OTA and/or analogue cable channels. |

It depends highly on the display, though.
I've played around with it just to see and IMO it's horrible. With the technology and display capability of our two LCD tv's, I would expect at least an easy to read font.. Instead, it looks worse than our old CRT tv's did |

This is one area built-in ATSC tuners really shine. The digital CC can be customized for size, font, color, opacity in both text and background, etc.
Vista Media Center also has CC support but it is crapola.

Guess I didn't look through the menus hard enough, found all sorts of options to change it.
While the default was horrible, it's much nicer now |
