HTC Sync isn't really required for much outside of syncing your contacts within Windows.
Once you've plugged in the USB cable, you'll see a USB icon appear in the Notification area at the top of the screen. Drag the notification bar down, and tap on the item that says USB Connected - Select to copy files to/from your computer. Once you've done that, the drive that shows up in My Computer will be browseable. Hope that helps.
