Quick question for anyone out there. I have an oldie but good spare amplifier sitting collecting dust. A Kenwood THX KM-X1 (I am not sure if you would be familiar with this antique). I am currently powering my hometheatre setup
2 pairs of Mission 735's, 1 pair of Mission 752's, and centre channel (Mission) with an H/K AVR525. Is it worth trying to try and bi-amp the Missions? I guess this would be called passive bi-amping. (power from the KM-X1 to one part (LF) of the bi-wireable and the HK the HF part of the bi-wire connection) I gather true biamping would be if I managed to find a series of cheap but decent electronic cross overs for each channel that I wish to bi-amp (ie each speaker). All 6 speakers are bi-wireable and the KM-X1 is a 6 channel amp. My idea being that I would use the KM-X1 to bi-amp to the Front Left Main (FM), RFM, RRS (Right Rear Surround), RLS, RSS (Right Side Surround), LRS (in other words all speakers except the centre channel and the subs). Does this sound right?? Thank you for any help you could provide. Matt My not so high end, older equipment is: Speakers (7.1 version: (4) Mission 735's (2) Mission 752's (1) Mission Centre Channel (Can't remember name) (1) Definitive Technologies Powerfield 12 Sound: H/K AVR 525 Kenwood KM-X1 Denon DA-500 (DAC) Yamaha 655 (5 Disc CD Player) Marantz SD-535 Double Tape Deck (Yes..I still use it..sad to say). Video Panasonic Rp-62 Prog DVD Player (Which is about to be replaced with...) LG 7832 (HD upconverter) DVD player Infocus X1 (DLP projector) JVC HS-7200U (S-VHS) Monster Powerbar 2100 |

I would start by simply biwiring the front and center speakers with some fairly good quality speaker wire designed for biwiring. This is the setup I use. It yields good results at a reasonable cost.
You could then try biamping later to see if it makes any further improvement. I would use similar amps when biamping and concentrate on the front speakers since that is where the main sound stage exists. I would not bother with electronic crossovers unless the speaker crossovers can be bypassed. Amplifier tone controls will probably be sufficient. |
