Default problems already - too many Watts.

when i built my home theatre room i had a dedicated 12/3 wire with a single pull 20amp deddicated breaker installed for my home theatre system. (ready for 240 if needed)

problem the other day is that my monster 5100 blew out when i had a small party (buzzing). its only been hooked up for 120v (which i think only handles 120v). notihng was different from when i always use it. i noticed that the power filter only handles up to 15amps in which now i would liek sometihng more beefier. im guessing i should find a filter that can handle 240v with a dual pull 20amp breaker so id be close to 4800watts??

reason:

obviously im running alot of watts, but im not even running my surround sound and subs yet??? which im wondering why the 5100 blew??? i no it wasnt from a power surge as none of my other power units failed in the house and it was a clear night. im guessing my furnace kicked in or something causing the volts to drop below the allowance causing the 5100 to fail.

the amp im using is a cerwin vega cv2800 which puts out 600 watts rms a channel @ 8 0hms in which its hooked up. and the speakers are the cls215 cerwin vegas and apparantly say they rms @ 250 - 300, but i can easily pull 13 amps @ 117v with them so go figure (1500watts peak, just power amp) and have peaked @ 16 amps on the power filter at one time with everything.

when i get the surround sound amp, emotiva xpa-5 which needs another 1000 watts rms, and yes the 7.2 surround speakers and center channel handle the full rms amount, and the subs (2 x cls-15s subs, 350watts each) im going to be in big trouble with this filter!!

i need help on how this should be hooked up for power and a filter!?!?!

what power conditioner and or voltage stabilizer would i require. all in all, ill be running about 4000 - 4500 watts with my surround, front speakers, subs, projector, and other components obviously all maxed out (in which i like to do sometimes). does this not mean id need a dual pull 20amp breaker and utilize my 240volts with a 240v 20amp recepticle so i could handle up to 4800 watts, into a conditioner that can handle this??

PLEASE HELP IM WITHOUT ANYTHING RIGHT NOW!!

If you ever actually ran all of your speakers at full output for any period of time you would likely be hearing impaired very quickly.

All that probably happened is the power bar failed. Just get a new one. But save your money, don't get a Mon$ter.

If you have a 20A breaker then you should look for a power bar that takes a 20A feed.

A 20 amp breaker for general wiring is not recommended and may even be illegal or invalidate your house insurance. What you want to do is install a "split receptacle" similar to those used in a kitchen. The 12/3 wiring will handle this and it will provide two 15 amp circuits on a dual breaker, probably more than enough for your needs. The trick will be to balance the load between the two circuits. If the A/V receiver draws up to 13 amps, put that on one circuit and put everything else on the other circuit. You will also need two surge protectors, one for each circuit. I like Tripp-Lite for build quality and price. They can be difficult to find. I mail ordered mine.

so theres no real point in running 240 volts into a torus rm60 bal??

i guess 2 x 15 amp breakers with their own wire would equal this anyway... this means id need another 5100...

i wonder why the first one blew tho?? (im trying to prevent this from happening again)

This is what I did, a single pole 20 amp breaker with a Nema 5-20R receptacle. There are a lot of 20 amp power console on the market. Some brands I've found are Furman Sound, Empower and there are others.

Here's a link I link I found listing a number of them.

scarybob,

what power units would you recommend? the same 5100's or something else like a torus rm60??

the torus handles 240volts and 20amps... which would give me the power i need... i dunno anymore..

FYI this kind of installation no longer meets code in a kitchen, these outlets need to be GFI protected and a 20A GFI receptacle is the approved method on a 20A breaker.

You could still do this as a fix but it makes no sense going with 2 - 5100's, if you go with the Torus unit you'll need a 250V Nema 6-20R receptacle and you 2 pole 20A breaker.

coop,

yes thats what i was thinking of doing then that would give me lots of juice for my home theatre system.

i talked to monster and they said they will replace my 5100, but the tech said they have 5100 ultra high current units that handle 20a. would i be further off going with 2 5100 uhc units or 1 torus??

anyone no much about the torus unit? filter in it?? anytihng??

what would you guys suggest so i can get 4500 watts out of my home theatre system?

You might want to look at the PureAV PF60 as a second unit, it's high current unit as well plus plus the cost is more realistic compared to the Monster unit.

not sure about the turus units

one thing to think of is "how many outlets do you need now and in the future".

Torus will be a better choice , but it will cost you a lot more than the Monster. However there is no comparision between the two.
