Question Hardware State of new 360 Consoles in late 2007?

I have noted in other threads about the 360 that the newer models have attempted to fix various inherent problems with the console. I would like to buy a 360 but I was wondering if the Elite or other models have fixed all of the problems or should I wait for a newer model to come out? Thanks!

that's the same info that I'm on the hunt for too. I found this article:

65nm Xbox 360s starting to trickle out?

We've been waiting and waiting, and after months of speculation, a hardware revision, a couple limited editions, and even a new SKU, it looks like Microsoft is finally shipping "Falcon"-equipped Xbox 360s with 65nm CPUs. According to the eagle-eyed posters in the official Xbox forums, Halo edition 360s from lot #734 appear to be the first machines with the new chips, and the time-honored method of peeking inside the case with a flashlight should confirm you have the latest and greatest once you get your baby home. Check the read links for tons more info (and a fun little flamewar).
There are lot numbers and even drive models to look for. I'm not sure how you determine this info in a store though.

Thanks! As you say, it looks like it will be difficult for the technically challenged people such as myself to figure out if they've got the proper model.

You can open the flip lid on the box and look at the manufacture date. Anything made in August of later will have the heat sync and new HDMI board with epoxy holding down the CPU.

Everyone is waiting for the new CPU, when really the GPU is the major cause of heat in the machine.

Go get one of the Pros from Walmart, cheap and have all the above improvements.

If you aren't in a hurry, I would just wait to see what the verdict on the street is about the new boxes whether they have any of the existing problems or have perhaps new ones. Start looking at forums for the xbox 360 and see what others are saying about the unit.

Also, when you decide to go in, I'd also buy it from a store that has at least a 30-day money back no hassles policy so that you can have a chance to give it a go - like leave it on for hours at a time even when you aren't playing etc. Give it your own stress test. If it can endure that in the initial times, then you have a better chance of not being hassled later. (I do this with almost all of my consumer electronics after I buy them just to weed out the ones that are defective but may not show it immediately).

Cheers
Cal

Default Halo 3 Limited Edition 65nm box can get RRoD

Halo 3 Limited Edition 65nm box can get RRoD

I hope this isn't true - it would be nice to get a RRoD free 360 before the holidays.

Here we have the first ever reports of the Halo Limited Edition Xbox 360 suffering from the dreaded Red Ring of Death. What makes this 'special' is that these systems are supposed to come with the new 65nm CPU / GPU chipset which should in theory help reduce the RRoD problem the Xbox 360 experiences.
