I agree.

Let's look at the numbers. The BD group is bragging that they have 5 times the base in terms of hardware. Instead of having 5x the number of s/w sales, they are basically even.

Considering the recent release of the PS3 and huge amount of new titles a TIE in software sales is basically a defeat.

WB and Universal titles for '07 haven't arrived yet in any great volume for HD DVD. Once that happens, who knows.

The year is young, many things can change.

Why is it that HD DVD proponents can use the full sales figures for PS3 and other players as a stat when trying to make a point about how the sales don't matchup, but if someone making a point about PS3 and BD sales brings it up, all HD DVD proponents start singing the attach rate song? I am really tired of this (and again I don't care who wins). You cannot have it both ways. Either quote attached rate whenever you talk about hardware to software sales for BD or don't ever use the argument.

Personally I hope the war never ends. Listening to you guys argue over luxury items like these is hilarious.

You hit it on the head. It's a luxury item now.

The war won't be won until it's a mainstream item.

So what does it take to become a mainstream item? Low cost - is that it? I can't see PQ being a factor for J6P.
Personally, I don't see HD becoming mainstream anytime soon. Sorry about the lack of optimism but the other night I was at a gathering and only 1 (out of about 11 guys) was even aware of HD format (let alone the war).

Buying an "HDTV" in the first place isn't about PQ for way too many people...it's about the "buzz" and keeping up with the Jones's. So it will be with hi-def DVD. There will come a time when people are buying it not even knowing what it is...they'll stick their regular DVD in it and marvel at the incredible picture quality.

And sadly, I'm not kidding either.

Basically even James? How is a 2 -1 sales lead basically even? How is a 2-1 sales lead gained after only 3 full months of the PS3 being released even?

And what Universal titles are you referring to that are going to turn the tide? Give me release dates on titles that I need to buy I'll get the 360 add-on today. As for Warner, nothing they release is going to turn the tide in HD-DVD's favour unless they don't release it on BD. How does a total HD release help HD-DVD in the least?

Who cares about the war...

...when I can use my HD-A1 as a sensational audio source?

This afternoon, I was viewing and listening to La Traviata, just received today, with beautiful and talented Anna Netrebko as Violetta.

It's a standard DVD but the DTS sound track over 5.1 multichannel analogs is simply outstanding.

I recently recorded Bellini's "I Puritani" (Great Performance at PBSHD) with Anna in the leading role:

And that is a keeper (great to have an external drive for extra capacity).

Early next week, I'm receiving Puccini's La Bohème, another great opera.

So, frankly, I'm not in a hurry for Universal to release more HD DVD's. And I just increased my membership at Zip.ca from 2 to 5 HD DVD's per month.

And that's exactly what the PS3 will be doing in time. The HD-DVD camp realized this, maybe too late, hence why there are rumors of cheap Chinese players coming out. Without studio support though it may be in vain.

About that cheap chinese Funai player cost.. looks like Sony announced their $600 BDP-S300. I suspect this will mean a further reduction in cost for the Funai player given the overall price scale ratios. But it would have to be significant to beat the PS3 value pricing.

It's not about players, it's about content. A HD-DVD player can be bought for $200 (for PC or XBox360) and a BR writer (for PC) is already at $600.
However, I selected the movies with an average rating of at least 6.0 at Rotten Tomatoes that I want to see (best movies of 2006) and here are my results:
Total: 39 movies
no HD release -> 11 movies
HD-DVD release -> 16 movies (HD-DVD exclusive: 6)
Blu-Ray release -> 21 movies (Blu-Ray exclusive: 10).
So I 'd say BR has a clear content advantage at this moment, but one would still need both to get all releases in HD.

yes, I know content is king, but with numbers as close and the crazy pricing of BD players currently, it's a tough pill to swallow. BD would need some serious cost cutting in their devices to make them competative with HD DVD. And let's face it, the title discrepency is not that large.
