Alright.. another update (see previous page). Last thing I will work on now is see if signal strength has changed much. I'll post back when I'm done.
Today, I went to my local computer store and exchanged the enclosure (Vantec Nexstar 3) as well as my hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB Sata drive).
I also went to Rogers and exchanged my SA 8300HD PVR. So, after exchanging everything (one by one), I thought I should now have a working system but no, I don't.
Before I exchanged the hard drive, I called Scientific Atlanta to get their opinion on the issue and they believe it is a firmware issue. This was before I exchanged the hard drive and after I had exchanged the enclosure and PVR. His reasoning was that the PVR does not care what type of drive is on the other end. It only looks to see if it gets the proper responses from the eSATA connection. Still, I wanted to be 100% sure so I went ahead with the hard drive exchange but still no luck. If I record HD material, within 10-20 minutes, something happens and my drive stops recording. Not sure if it's the same thing with SD material but I'm going to give that a test as well to see.
I'm starting to think that the technician is right and that Rogers may have pushed some sort of update to the PVR that is accidentally causing this behavior. The technician also mentioned that being with Rogers does not necessarily mean that you will or won't have the problem. It could have something to do with specific areas depending on how the network is setup for that region.
My current SARA version is: 1.87.16.a11
My current location: Ottawa, K1K3B3
Hopefully with all the testing I've done, I'll be able to get to the right person at Rogers to see if they can report this issue and possibly send another update our way. I'm also forwarding my details to Scientific Atlanta to see if they can report it to Rogers using their escalation process. You may want to do the same.
Send email to customer.service@sciatl.com with the following info:
-Cable Provider (Rogers)
-Postal Code
-Symptom: external drive stops recording at random times. Sound/video blips seem to be experienced just before the recording stops
-SARA version: 1.87.16.a11 (check yours)
-Tests performed: exchanged PVR, enclosure and hard drive. Was working roughly 2 or 3 weeks ago and now using external hard drive is unreliable.
And on that last note, I want to extend my thanks to PC Cyber here in Ottawa for being so generous in helping me troubleshoot this problem. If any of you need computer hardware, make sure to give them a look.
