Question Sportsnet NHL games in HD?

I know that Sportsnet has about 20 or some odd games for the Leafs and many more for other Canadian teams(flames, canucks, oilers, sens) but will ANY of these games be available in HD?

... and the reason is that they only have one HD channel ... and they're not allowed to show "local market only" games nationally.

TSN gets around this by showing the Leafs games in HD to the Toronto market only, while showing "alternate" programming to the rest of Canada (so I am told, living in BC)

Now I can see why people call it the Toronto Sports Network!

Not me. How does it make it Toronto-centric that they show alternate programming outside Toronto? They'd have to show other content outside Toronto anyway--they're just allowing their Toronto viewers to view their team in HD. Unless they can't/won't do the same for other markets (ie. show Canucks/Flames/Oilers/etc. games in HD with alternate programming for other areas), then I don't see how this make them Toronto-centric.

They can't/won't do it for any other teams, hence the claim...

Seeing as how they're a money-making enterprise, maybe there's not enough demand outside of Toronto for this?

I mean this seriously and not facetiously. If you want the same arrangement for your sports team, then get your friends/family, etc. to write/call TSN and tell them you want to be able to watch your locally-shown games in HD. If they get enough requests, they'll do it.

Presumably they already perceive a demand for this service in the Toronto area, hence their providing it.

That's a pretty BS reason, with the not being able to show games nationally on HD. You'd think the NHL would want more viewers on the TV, yet they continue to blackout games and refuse to allow national HD coverage

This thread has gotten off topic and perhaps one of the Mods will split it.

With TSN headquartered in Toronto, it is only natural that they're going to be Toronto centric.

Evidence of the Toronto Sports Network became obvious to me last year when hockey training camp opened. I noticed it with the amount of coverage devoted to who is going to be the Leafs' fourth line winger - it was even the lead story on one sportdesk show. No other Canadian team got that level of coverage.

The recent Allen for the pro football hall of fame talk was a result of him playing for the Argos. If he was playing for (let's say) Winnipeg, there would've been recognition for breaking the record and that would've been it.

They allow national HD coverage to the companies that paid for national HD rights.

On topic. Why can't SN show HD in Leafs region, and show alternate programming outside the region, like TSN does?

Off topic. Anything done in the CFL would get huge play on all the networks in Canada. Toronto or not. There's a media conspiracy to advertise the CFL whenever possible. Damon Allen? Canton? haha

they didn't do it last year. here's hoping it will be different this year. technically it should be possible as long as they have the same technical (and mental) abilities as TSN.

I've seen HD poker instead of a blacked out football game.
