Default Optical Audio output on DVD player

I have a 3-4 year old DVD player, which has an optical port for audio which I use with my surround sound setup, and it sounds great. But my DVD player was not progressive scan, and I wanted to make sure everything I had was top quality (well, as best as I can afford )

So I got a Panasonic DVD-S29 "advanced" progressive scan for Xmas... all the features look great, reviews sound positive.... but there is no OPTICAL port for sound!? Why would a newer DVD player take out the optical port when my old one even had it?

Anyway, my question is, should I be taking it back in exchange for an upgraded model with optical (ie quality pretty noticeable?) and if so, what might be the next model up with the optical output I should get?

The newer player probably has a coaxial audio output, which is just as good for digital audio, provided you have a coaxial audio input on your A/V Receiver.

See the Digital Home FAQ "Cables & Connections"

I've noticed the newer Sony's don't have optical audio out either.

Optical or coax makes no difference in sound quality... the cable is cheaper too.

I think most manufacturers are cutting costs by eliminating a dual digital out.

how ironic...

My Pioneer Elite DVD HDD/Burner has only optical, no coax. This is a pain in my side. I have way too many optical sources.

I'd use Coax if you can. Better connection.

It's no better or worst, it's the same (It's a digital signal).
