Default keep my phone # -- VoIP ---> VoIP ?

Hello all,

I have a small question for you guys...

Right now, only Primus offers phone numbers in my area ( hull,qc , 819)...
And I was wondering if you guys had experience in keeping your phone number when switching from one VoIP company to another...

Thing is, my gf doesn't want to loose her phone number that she has been carrying with her for the past 4-5 years. And now we live together.

If I port my current phone number with Primus, and I plan to switch to acanac when they'll provide numbers in my area, keeping the same number, is that an easy move? Is there any chance that I loose the number I have when switching VoIP companies??

thanks for your answers

I Can't tell if you have 1 or 2 phone numbers (yours and hers) your Girlfriend had her numer for 4-5 years so I can tell it wasn't VoIP to begin with.

If the number you have with Primus was ported before you should be able to move it to ACANAC, if your 2nd number initially belonged to Primus they may not give it up. I had that problem when Teleo.com closed their service, they were unwilling to give up their phone numbers.

We only have one phone number ( 819, in hull, qc )
I was planning to subscribe to Primus VoIP and get that number ported.

When ACANAC will be able to service that number, I was planning to switch with them.

My only fear was to loose the number when switching from Primus VoIP to ACANAC....

I'd like to have more than 1 opinion please.

Who already did a switch from a VoIP company to another keeping their phone number ???

Thanks alot for you help

Colon,

I am also looking at Primus which will port my number. I would call Vonage (since they are big) and ask someone if you currently have Primus or whatever if you can have that number ported? If they can't do it then I imagine no one can. Let us kow your results.

PS: Too bad Videotron VOIP (when it arrives) has such a terrible pricing model. Unlimited province (Quebec) or nothing!

Ok, follow up....
I emailed Vonage to ask them the question:

--------------------------------
> Hi,
> lets say I'm with Primus VoIP right now and I have my phone
> number (xxx) xxx-xxxx and want to switch to Vonage. If my area is
> covered by Vonage, is there still a chance I can loose my phone
> number during the switch?
>
> thanks

their answer :

-------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in Vonage.

Assuming that your number registers as transferable to Vonage, and that
you signify that you wish to transfer the number over when you sign up
for our service, that number will be transferred over to our system as
long as the account with the number that is to be transferred is not
closed before the number is successfully transferred over.

To verify if the number you have is transferable to Vonage, you may
visit http://vonage.ca/avail.php?lid=nav_avail and use the LNP box on
the right side of the page. Just enter the area code and prefix of your
number and hit submit. The page will refresh to tell you whether the
number is transferable to the Vonage system or not.

Please let us know if we may be of any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Jacob
Vonage Sales

OK so VOIP to VOIP LNP will work as long as you DO NOT close your account with the old provider. Great thanks for the follow up.

Local Number Portability (LNP) works both ways so if a company offers it, then they have to be prepared to transfer both ways.

Red face phone no. transfer

If you have a land line phone no. you can transfer it to a voip phone provider if they provide this service .Digital voice, primus will transfer land line phone no.--webcall will not transfer a land line no. And neither will primus or webcall transfer a phone no. from another voip phone service provider.I went through three different phone no.'s in 8 months because of this and not wanting to keep my land-line phone no.

Thanks for the information. I guess this is where some regulation would be a good thing. I don't like the idea of my phone number being held captive.

Hugh what do you think?
