I personally recommend the use of both power/surge protector units & line conditioners (good quality ones of course).
This is based on personal experience & advice from professionals. If you read the eula/contract from the UPS/Surge protector manufacturers they indicate they only warantee protection from problems/damages occuring from the circuits that are plugged into their products. If ANY device in the loop has any wire/cable that is not plugged into a protector - then there is an openning for them to deny coverage. Last July 2011 my Sub blew the 240V fuse & a capacitor next to it - even though I had a dedicated SW200 sub unit attached to it - luckily it was repairable & Monster covered it - & it was only ~$300. The replacement cost of that sub is $4K+. The same day my neighbour lost a $6K smart TV from damage through the DSL phoneline that was not protected, therefore he was not covered. I also have a rider on my insurance for electronics replacement value. In the '98 ice storm I had to replace all my HT system components except speakers - insurance paid over $10K. Years ago an indirect lightening strike blew the fuse in my Bell phoneline box & took out the PC's dialup internet modem. I currently have $50K+ worth of HT & PC equipment to protect & ALL inputs to every piece connected is surge protected as well as having line conditioning where needed. I suggest that you first try hooking all the inputs & see if there are any issues - then proceed from there & cover yourself accordingly. |

Just to be clear, I was not recommending not using UPS. I recommend them all the time, however, I was just explaining why the CSRs ask you to unplug the problem device from a power bar (because some people have really cheap ones):
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...403#post413403 UPS recommendation http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=56058 UPS discussions Also, as mentioned by Pinza and by me, running RF-coax through such a device can sometimes cause issues. This is especially true for Satellite (moreso than cable) due to the frequencies involved.

57 I've done cable and satellite installs and have seen lots of service calls on the cable side caused by coax on power strips. I've only seen a couple of satellite customers do that but with no problems. However from the past experience with cable I always assume and eliminate that situation on sight. Thanks for confirming that though.

Please explain...
If cheap power bar is the problem (I use 25$ Noma from canadian tire ... cheap :-) ), why would the 9200, the 6131 + HD, the daytek dvr still be working flawlessly even if the are still connected in the power bar. Why would only refurbs 9242 die when plugged in.... How can I conclude that Bell refurrbs are simply not crappy and that powerbar is the problem... I really think that if cheap power bar was the problem, the other receivers would die too... |

We didn't say it applied to your application. We said cheap bars can sometimes create problems and that's why CSRs ask customers to plug directly into the wall.

Im trying to run my 9242 in dual mode. My problem is i have a co-axial coming out of the back of the reciver that i was told is to run the 2nd tv in the house (in SD only, i know) but i cant get any signal using the co-ax.
When i plug in my rca output from the back of the receiver that says 'TV-2' output it works perfectly. Unfortunately for i had co-axial run through my house to my 2nd tv. Does anyone know why my co-ax output wont work and how to get it to work? Thanks in advance. |

Make sure that the TV that you're sending the signal to is tuned to channel 3, or whatever channel is appropriate for your BTV equipment. Also, make sure the TV is on the appropriate input - in this case probably labelled "TV".

The TV2 Output is via an Agile Modulator so it can be on many different Channels, not just 3. The default is Channel 60 (cable) I believe.
Go into the System Info Menu, MENU, 6, 1, 3 and it will show you what the Modulator is set for. Then at the second TV location, do a Channel Scan, that should find it, providing the coax is not damaged or defective between the two points. |

There are often several options listed for scanning. Perhaps you didn't scan for "cable"?

Glad you found it. It does sound like your scan for for "air" as 57 says.

Well another 9242 seems to have pooched.
It was going through the reboot cycle with loud fans over & over When left unplugged for 1/2 hr or so I plugged it in again & this time I immediately went into system menu selected the disable update time & it has worked flawlessly for about 1 week so far. Holding the power button in did not help at all. I set it back to enable & it went back into the reboot endlessly cycle - so I selected disable again & all is well. It still goes into sleep mode & the program menu updates as well. Obviously some issue with the program coding for the reboot cycle when "enable" is selcted. I rewc'd the replacement 9242 yesterday & since I do not trust the current 9242 I will replace it today. It sure would be nice to have a utility on a USB thumb drive to save all settings, locked channels & record program PVR timers. Another thing - I told the 2nd level tech we had Dish Care (since 2009) & he said OK - then we got an email a few hours later stating we have to pay $150+ for this 9242 as well. I called back - spoke to a supervisor & he cancelled the charge & said we will also get a refund for the $150+ charge they made us pay last year & should not have. Bell sure likes to ding customers with "sneaky" charges. |

I am having the second unit replaced in two months. First one worked for years and one morning was doing the endless reboot thing. Now the replacement is doing the same thing, nothing on screen, fans run for about three minutes, stops green led comes on, fans start up and nothing. Reset, unplugging, nothing works. And again it happens in the night, last time at 3AM. Tried to get them to admit there was a problem with these units and nightly updates, but no resolution. Another replacement coming, but I lost all my recordings again. External HD saves some, but this is getting annoying. Going to call for account credit when the next unit arrives.

DADD
Welcome to the Refurb 9242 club Last year I went through 3 re-shipped 9242's before I got the 4th one which worked - that one is the one I just replaced this year. I have had situations where I unplug the problematic 9242 for 5 mins then lift the front of the 9242 about 1/2" up & drop it. Then it had worked enough to get my saved programs to the EXHDD - Probably the internal HDD has a "park" issue. Also do not have the EXHDD plugged in when trying to get the current 9242 to reboot. If you get it running - immediately go to the inactivity standby mode & disable it. In my previous post #2398 where I wrote "selected the disable update time" Should have been selected Disable in the Inactivity Standby Mode |
