Of course, we can never know for sure because Amazon won't provide sales figures, and nobody can accurately predict sales from the supply chain given that only predicts the number built, not sold. (and we know from the Playbook and TouchPad disasters that build numbers are no predictor of sales success) |

I just really don't think they care about iPod Touch sales anymore. iPods only represent a small percentage of their earnings at this point anyway, and it's declining. If they can make a decent profit from an iPad mini, I really don't think the iPod Touch would be an obstacle at all.

Its actually a defining characteristic of Apple...they are not afraid to cannabalise themselves...build what the customer wants and the profits will follow...

I agree with you that they probably don't care too much - I just brought up the point because when you look at the pricing for their products it is really hard to see where the iPod touch would be pricewise if they iPad mini starts at $250.
But I still think there is a place for the iPod touch and the iPod classic since some people, like me, want a device that is truly pocket size and can hold a sizable music collection. I personally won't be buying an iPad mini but we already have several iPads in the house so I can see adding more. The mini will also make a good input device for stuff like Home Automation systems, etc given its reasonable price. |

You know people will be waiting on the street to buy these things.

the iPod is like a gateway device you get kids onto them early, when parents can't justify buying an iPhone for a 10 year old, and get them into the apple ecosystem then when they get a phone or a tablet, they have a bunch of apps and stuff that they'll want to keep, and boom, now they buy an iPhone, or an iPad |

actually, that's totally true. I know a few parents that did that with their kidlets. |

My 8 and 3 yr old has an iPad2. If the mini was available I would have purcahsed 2 of these for my kids. Then they wouldn't have been fighting over the 1 they share. Of course that would mean they would just be after my iPad instead of their minis.

That's true, bit I suspect most parents buying a gateway device for their kids would buy the 8GB Touch at $199, rather than the 32 for $299. If the upcoming refresh changes the entry level Touch to 16GB then I think that will be even more true.

I think a smaller iPad would/will do quite well. Lighter, more portable for people who just want a small form factor to put in coat pocket, purse etc.
One of the comments I frequently hear from people who have tried both android tablets and apple devices is how much better the app store experience and quality of available iOS apps is compared to the android market. BTW: I had an Asus TF 101 for almost a year before going back to an iPad. The primary reason I went back was the quality of the apps. My boss bought the new Nexus and I played with it while he was on vacation. Nice little tablet but I can see more people choosing a mini iPad over it. |
