Onkyo tx-nr 818 issues - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

Ok so I finally got my reciever and speakers. Unfortunately I'm waiting for te correct mounts so I don't have them all set up yet, but I have set up my reciever.

I'm starting this thread that I can add to as I go along.

Problem #1: bell satallite/pvr and ps3 are both put to the receiver and one out to the tv. I set it up so that the pvr is the HDMI selected to work on passthrough in standby mode. I'm getting video, but no audio either with the receiver on or off. Any ideas?

Are you talking about audio on the TV or audio via the AVR? In order to get audio via the AVR you need to set it to "AVR", not "TV". If you're trying to pass the audio through to the TV in standby, some AVRs do that, however, you often need to enable the "HDMI sync" option (or something similar) in the AVR and read the appropriate section on how this works - it's sometimes difficult to set up and requires everything be correct. This (standby passthrough) also uses more power in the AVR when it's in standby since that "circuit" needs to be "on". I'm not sure if that's what your talking about. Also, some AVRs do not pass the signal when in standby. Most people just use the AVR for audio full time. You cannot have audio on the TV and the AVR at the same time - this causes an echo.

What I was getting at is that with this receiver you can select 1 HDMI input to be used in standby. I selected the cab/sat input. It passes the video weather on or in standby, but no audio in either.

Hey 57, I doubt you have any experience with the new onkyo receivers yet (tx-nr515, 616, 717, 818). But have you had any problems before with other receivers passing audio through from a bell 9242 in standby before? I'm still having issues. I've replaced the reciever already and updated firmware, still have te same issue.

Yes, this has been an issue for many people. Most people simply leave the standby passthrough off and use the AVR for listening 100% of the time. I mentioned some of the issues in my previous post. Do you have the HDMI "sync/link" feature turned on in the AVR and on the TV?

Do you have a link for the AVR OM? Does the OM indicate that Standby Passthrough is an option - what page?

Not sure if I'm misreading it, but it looks as though HDMI control needs to be "off"? This lack of consistency between manufacturers can be confusing... Also, lots of times these are written by ESL people... Good Luck.

Lol. Funny, that's essentially what I was told by onkyo's tech support line. Coincidently I think they are those same people who write the manual!

Your an AV guy, what would you do in my situation? Have you had problems with onkyo before?

I would try the various options until it works. If it doesn't work, I'd probaby give up and use the AVR 100% of the time I want to watch TV.

I was just trying to avoid 100% use for both ease for my wife and the wear and tear on the receiver. I'm still in the return window so I have to eliminate my devices as the problem. The passthrough was a significant part of my decision, and the onkyo came highly recommended from the place I bought it. I was originally looking at a Yamaha aventage rx-a1010 as well. If this doesn't work out I may go that way.
