Default Olympics opening ceremony (spoilers below!)

Hi I hope this is the right place to post this because it isn't really sports.

The ceremony is a lot of fun so far.
Theyre just in another funny part. I dont think this board has spoiler tags so I'll just put some spoiler space...

The rumors were right about James Bond and that was a funny skit. The Queen has a good sense of humor. And now there was just a very funny part with Rowan Atkinson. Also the Olympic rings were beautiful with all the fireworks coming out of them.

Default Olympic Opening/Closing Ceremonies

What did you think? Seems like they re-created the Shire. Not very dynamic so far. CTV just cut to commercials arghhhh.

I loved everything except CTV going to commercials. It's not as if London would pause while we have to see commercials. Sheesh.

Loved hearing Pink Floyd and the floating pig from the Animals album. Sad to see how Ali is going down the hill fast. All in all, I think the opening was very well done.

What about the sound when Paul McCartney began to sing? Lipsync gone bad or what?

Rowan as Mr. Bean certainly played a large part.

Yeah the commercials are killing me. We just missed 15 teams!

PVR'ing it as I type this. So my thumb might get a little sore hitting the skip button? Good to know. Silly CTV.

Edit: Saw that NBC had the opening ceremonies, so I went and deleted the CTV one. Hopefully there will be less interruptions and more show.

I missed the Pink Floyd bit. Good thing that I PVR'd it....
I was similarly dismayed by CTV's untimely commercial breaks. They certainly didn't pull that during the Vancouver Olympics, from my recollection.

Gone bad for sure. It seems that pre-recorded sound went fast-forward by about 5 sec, and it took sound crew another 3-4 secs to realize that and turn it off. Only then I realized how BAD he sounds live at his age.

Only a CTV Commentator, reading from a script would refer to one of the most impressive Victorian Engineers ever as "I K Brunel". No one from the UK would ever refer to him as that, he is/was Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel

A great man indeed and I for one loved the portrayal of him by Kenneth Branagh.

I mean for opening or closing ceremonies, we know we are on CTV with their two logos on the screen. They should be seen uninterrupted for these 2 shows. After that, put 20 minutes of commercials if you want. I will be gone to bed by that time anyways.

I was seeing comments on Twitter last night that the evening replay on CTV had entire segments of the ceremonies edited out. That's disappointing.

Surprise surprise! They pulled the same stunt with their DVD and blu-ray releases of the 2010 ceremonies in Van. There was NO excuse for that, I spend 70 dollars for that set and then you condense a 3 hours ceremony to 90 minutes, and in a very bad fashion where it's extremely obvious when you chop bits up?

CTV should never be awarded the Olympics again when they treat it with such disdain.

The opening ceremonies were very entertaining. Glad I watched yesterday evening.

The opening ceremonies covered many important subjects and artists.

Nice show.

I thought CTV's coverage pretty good.

The hosts / comentators kept mostly silent (and that is a good thing) - except for a few (good) short comments or phrases here and there to explain / to give basic context of what was being shown.

I thought CTV let it run without many interruptions - without many commercials. Seemed reasonable to me.

Neat to see Mike Oldfield play some guitar and Tubular Bells.

Wonder what Closing Ceremonies will be like.

Cheers all ! Good show I thought. Good coverage CTV I thought.

( much better, CTV, compared to some of what I remember from the Vancouver Winter Olympics ... lets see how the rest goes. )

Default No Elton John?

I was surprised there was no tribute to Elton John. I wonder if he'll be featured in the closing ceremonies?
I find it hard to believe all the performers, or most of them, were "volunteers"!
I'm ceremonies weren't spoiled by rain. I couldn't help wondering when I watched the various sequences how they would have been done had there been rain. Especially the sequence with the kids in the hospital ward.
I think, though, the Beijing Opening Ceremonies were far superior.

SPOILER ALERT if you haven't watch the opening ceremonies yet...

It seemed like they were trying (but not succeeding) for a Cirque du Soleil feel in parts and more of a Les Miz feel (and succeeding...unfortunately) in others. The two high points were "The Queen" jumping out the helicopter, and the INCREDIBLE torch lighting. The Chariots of Fire bit with Rowan Atkinson was good too but went on a little too long.

Also, I don't know much about royal protocol, but couldn't the Queen have done a little more than just declare the games open? Like maybe even "Welcome to England everyone"? And why did she have to read that off a card?

NBC did a nice job except for the constant babbling of the commentator. So, I turned down the center channel and it was good.
