@ Smath : CCI has a layer 2 service upon request . Essentially WiMax CPE will be functioning as pure bridge and your end device(router , etc) will get a public IP.
BUT Due to overhead you will loose 20%-30% bandwidth , that's why this service is not being advertised .

Just a tip , if you'd like guys to get somebody from Tech support call between 08 and 09 AM .
Are you suggesting that if we use our own wireless router for our home network, that we will see a decrease in the throughput?

On another note, I am trying to find a residential customer in the village of Warburg that I could contact to run some tests of connectivity. If anyone out there is monitoring this thread and can help, let me know. E-mail at imagestealer@gmail.com

In layer 2 mode where you router ( VPN router and any DHCP supporting device ,etc) gets public IP address yes you'll loose about 20% of the bandwidth.
In this case IPSEC (VPN protocol) passes CPE transparently.

In case of the standard setup , where CPE gets WAN public IP and your router acts like a bridge and you network becomes a "NAT" no bandwidth loss BUT
you have to configure port forwarding for your VPN server for example and only Motorola CPE will pass IPSEC in this case.

I hope it helps

An update :

All IP transit traffic has been switched to new provider few days ago . The service has better performance and smaller ping times now .

L2 service works better as well

Enjoy

Default SMTP

I can't seem to get my outgoing mail to work. It worked fine with my TELUS Smart Hub (currently still have it and have to switch to it to send out mail.). Receiving mail works fine but sending times out. Its my wife's work email, not a CCIWIRELESS provided email account.

Any thoughts?

Do you have a cci wireless outgoing mail server configured in your Email client?

If not, you'll need one.

If yes, are you authenticating when using the outgoing mail.cciwireless.ca smtp server?

I just checked my settings in Mail on OS X, and I am using the default ports, SSL, and one of our cci wireless mail accounts with password.

Default Questions

So, we're going to get CCI very soon and I was wondering how latency is now, can I port forward without calling in, and what is the "modem" we're going to get (link?)
Thank you!

The modem is Zyxel/Huawei outdoor Wi-Max CPE . There is no restrictions for the customer access,so if you know how to do the port forwarding there is no need to call in.Otherwise our tech support can walk you through how to do it.
WAN port gets public address and your LAN becomes a NAT ( 192.168.x.x space) ,you can set up the mode as bridge and use your own router
In case if you are getting L2 service(business plan),you router/end device gets a public IP and the modem is totally transparent to IP traffic.
.

Latency in average 110 - 130 ms .

And as usual you've got unlimited usage .

I hope it helps

Can anybody tell me how to go about getting CCI Wireless activated in a house we are renting.

We are renting a place in Chauvin AB. The owner of the house had CCI and left some kind of black box in the house. He said the box had to be placed in a certain window to pick up signal. Do I need to do anything besides call in and start an account? Do I have to pay any kind of install fee (as everything is all there)?

There is also a MCSNet dish on the roof that the previous renters had installed.

I am new to all this rural internet stuff so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds like you have an indoor Motorola Wimax modem,so to get a better signal you need to put as close as possible to the window . If you're in the village of Chauvin the CCI 300ft tower is located only couple kms away, you will get nice and stable service .
Keep in mind the modem is not binded to particular tower ,it means if you will move some where in Alberta and CCI has the coverage there you can have an internet and VOIP service . it's like a cell phone ( sort of )

To set up an account just call in sales team and set up an account then call tech support and they'll activate your modem . I don't think you'll have to pay an installation fee.

I hope it helps

Thanks MadIvan. I called CCI today. It sounds like we are good to go but I think they need to work on their wording of certain things.

Even though the previous tenants left what we needed at the house I still needed to pay either $150 for installation on a 3yr contract or $400 for installation on a month to month contract. My argument is that there is nothing to install so why am I paying for install? I didn't want to sign a contract as we may not stay in the same place for 3 yrs and move back to the city.

What really gets me is I had to pay money up front for them to do absolutely nothing! Instead of them calling it an installation fee they should call it an activation fee (which is still waayyyy over priced)

I did confirm with Customer Care manager you don't have to pay any installation fee if you already have a modem in your possession .
You can contact him directly ( check PM please ) and set up an month to month account .

Thanks

Thanks so much. We will give him a shout tomorrow. Just a little confused on how they do things. Again, we have equipment but have paid $200 for something. I just want to plug in the box that is in the house and have the internet work on the 17th when we move in. Haha.

Hopefully we'll get sorted out tomorrow.
