All on the same day we say goodbye to Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord, country music legend Kitty Wells, and management/self help guru Stephen Covey.
Raise your lighters for Jon Lord, keyboardist of Deep Purple, RIP at 71. He was amazing, and rock wasn't even his first love - jazz was. My favourite DP song of all time is "Lazy", esp. the live in Japan version, on which Lord totally reminds me of the late jazz organist Jimmy Smith. From that same era of British rock were two other keyboardists I really liked. Rick Wakeman was great, and had the flexibility to do progressive with Yes as well as proto-metal with Black Sabbath. Keith Emerson was amazingly skilled but I always thought he was a bit too posh to really rock it out. Jon Lord played a wide variety of styles even while staying within DP's niche. Raise your glasses for Kitty Wells, the "Queen Of Country Music" and Country Music Hall of Famer. My late mom loved Kitty Wells. Raise your notepads for Stephen Covey, author of the seminal "7 Habits Of Highly Successful People". Having taken Franklin-Covey courses in my career I cannot overstate his influence on today's business management environment. |

It's a busy day for Death. R.I.P. to all three, but mostly to Jon Lord. That man could literally and figuratively rock a Hammond organ something fierce!
