I'm still using a TiVo and their guide data (Tribune Media, if I'm not mistaken) has none of the problems you mention. I swear that the first company to offer a TiVo-branded HD PVR will have my business. I'm not holding my breath (but I am holding on to my SD TiVo).

I think it's a bit funny that DLNA is mentioned on the Gateway box, yet we don't know when we'll get it, or how it'll work.

I have a 22 minute recording of Deadliest Catch that plays for about 2-4 seconds then skips ahead about the same amount. It then repeats the cycle through the whole 22 minutes of what is supposed to be a 1 hour show.

It's the only example I have found so far. It was recorded this morning at 6AM. The Morning News recorded just fine. (Started at 5:30AM.)

Looks like I have exactly the same thing here. They can't blame this one on 'location' now, can they?

Gord Lacey Bend Broadband has theirs all set up and running, so that could give you an idea about what it will look like at what you can/can't do..
The "Alpha" (gateway system) manual is here..
http://www.bendbroadband.com/residen...User_Guide.pdf

I was hoping to at least get NETFlix on our systems, but I do not think Shaw will allow that as they have their own (more expensive) service that does much of what Netflix does...

According to that doc, it doesn't ffwd or rwd video from a DLNA server. That sucks. It doesn't list AVI support.

Supported Files
• Photo: JPEG, GIF*, BMP* and PNG* files
• Music: MP3, WMA, and AAC (unprotected files), and LPCM files
• Video: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and WMV files
*These file types are available through DLNA® servers that support transcoding.

Hmm the user guide also lists a Caller ID function. Is that a feature in the works for Shaw as well?

Ultimately, yes. It will only work with Shaw phone though so don't be disappointed if you don't have it working with any other phone service once they do introduce it, likely many months from now.

So I finally got the Gateway installed. And, as expected, there are likes and dislikes. I can't believe that I missed the fact that there are no canadian time-shift channels in HD. That means midnight recordings of the Daily show... damn. I used to love watching that at 9:30. Anyway - first technical question. My fast forward and rewind to not operate like a normal FF or RR. It skips ahead in chunks and does not give any normal "sideways triangles" to show how many times you've clicked it for speed. Granted I've only tried this on VOD. That couldn't be it could it?

PQ is definitely "deeper" than telus, but nowhere near the quality we get in the USA (Time Warner Cali) and with a 720p set no less!

PS -super disappointed all the EXO VOD hype is just that - hype. Only a fraction of the content is in HD. Thanks comrades. I love living in soviet Canada...

See jorton's signature for a 'remote cheat sheet' or search for it or look for the link in the 'Read this first' thread and you will find some helpful tips in it.

Note: VOD transport commands work as you describe. It is a sad state of affairs but that's what Shaw gives us.

I'm guessing you moved to Shaw and the Gateway without having any experience with any other Shaw HD boxes? That is too bad and while it would be nice to have the Canadian timeshifts in HD, I don't mind watching Stewart and Colbert the next day.

Hmm.... I found the cheat sheet, but 1) it doesn't mention anything about FF or RR and...
2) why would the universally accepted DOUBLE-SIDEWAYS-TRIANGLES the that say FF and RR not be the right buttons????

And yes - it's been a couple of years since I had Shaw. I did not recall NOT having east-coast Canada time shift channels in HD.

Oh well...

Correct, ffwd/rwd does not work for DLNA. It's a big problem IMO. It has played every AVI file I've thrown at it. MKVs are hit or miss. (I use PlayOn as my media server software... I can configure it to transcode videos for better compatibility but of course I will lose some video quality.)

Apparently they are working on AVI support that will be available at some later date following DLNA activation.

IanJames, please forgive me for my initial comment late last night. I thought you might be using the 'skip' buttons but then realized you said it was only on VOD so far and that prompted me to amend that post.

Don't forget that AVI is not a codec, it is just a container. Within it the video can be encoded in almost any codec, and so can the audio. So, as an example, if the avi you are trying to play uses the MPEG-4 video codec and the MP3 audio codec; then it will likely play. But the only way a product ever could be said to support playback of avi's is if it supported every audio and video codec out there.
