I am looking into recievers and every time I turn around, there's another model to consider.
My family has always gone with Yamaha, but lately there seems to be some pretty descent from onkyo. Unfortunately, I have no experience with them I noticed the yamaha aventage series carries 4yr warranty to onkyos 2, onkyo is thx select 2 certified, not yamaha, onkyo uses audessey, vs Yamaha YPAO, I have no idea where to start. If someone can help me start to narrow it down by brand, I can probably go from there. Anyone have certain problems etc? Also anyone know when the 2012's will hit Canadian stores? The recievers I am considering: Onkyo tx-nr809, 717, 818, Yamaha rx-a820 |

Go with what you think sounds better for a similar price. It is that simple.

So very true ..
Comparing for given price level of AVR, there will be alot of feature overlap. The trait that usually sets one from the other is sound quality, which essentially is personal preference ...and, IMO more importantly, sound accuracy. Why not have both. Have you considered Anthem's MRX ?

I like Yamaha sound but I had to return a good deal (HTR-8063) because it has only one USB port which is in the front but is covered. Like many, I rather have that front lid closed at all time LOL
I am sure you know already, these network capable receivers these days are seriously useful in multi-zoning with iPad, iPhone/iPod, smart phones etc. For the first time, I don't need to get off the couch and can assess to full media library. I personally prefer a USB port in the back to connect a portable HDD instead of using DNLA server. USB assess is better in the Yamaha anyways but no back USB port is not excusable IMHO. I am not sure if the A820 has a functional USB port in the back or not. You're all good if there is one.

If the Onkyo and the Yamaha are roughly equal in terms of features and cost, I'd pick the Onkyo because it uses Audyssey, which has a much better auto-EQ reputation than YPAO.
YMMV, of course.

I ordered the onkyo 809 over the rxa-820. Among other reasons, the 809 has a 3rd zone preout, 135w/channel vs 100w, and a few other features. I chose the 809 over 818 basically because the only major difference was AirPlay and the powered 3rd zone and the cost was about $200 more.
Oh and yes it has a rear USB port. |

Well, I went to pick up my equipment and it was a little bit of a fiasco. One guy told me the stuff was all there, when I got there half was missing but they cut me a great deal for my troubles. They upgraded my avr to an onkyo tx-nr818 and they upgraded the bookshelf mounts both at no extra charge. I actually feel a bit bad, I'm not even sure they broke even at the end but Here's what I got:
Onkyo tx-nr818 4- energy conniesieur cb-20 bookshelf speakers 1- energy conniesieur cc-10 center 2- energy conniesieur cr-10 surrounds 1-JBL studio 150p 10" sub 1 center mount 4 bookshelf mounts $2650 tax in. Not bad eh? Only catch is the cr-10 and 4 bookshelf mounts are being shipped to me because they didn't have them yet but I can't complaint, I should have them Wednesday or so. |
