Default Actiontec V1000H as router only??

Hello,

I recently canceled my Telus Optik TV account and moved to Shaw as I was offered an incredible package. The modem/router Shaw supplied had very poor WiFi range when compared to the Actiontec. I own the Actiontec and I'm wondering if I can use it purely as a router. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yup the Actiontec works fine as a router with another provider. All you do is plug your Shaw modem into the WAN port of the Actiontec.

You might want to call Shaw and ask them to change your modem/router combo into strictly a modem so you're not going through 2 firewalls.

You could also call also Shaw; it could be that the channel on the modem is set to something the Actiontec was not and thus picking up interference. Otherwise from the technical perspective everything is pretty much the same hardware wise.

I've used the Actiontec and both Shaw wireless modems (SMC and Cisco) and I found the Actiontec to be much better router in terms of wireless signal/performance as well as network performance in general.

Technically I don't think that you do own the Actiontec but the difference is that Telus won't come looking for you to get it back!

Default Actiontec Wireless Not Powerful Enough...

... so when I upgraded from Telus High Speed to Telus Optik High Speed internet, I hung on to the old 2Wire modem/router, and hooked it up to the new Actiontec to keep using it as the wireless access point. The 2Wire puts out more power than the Actiontec.

Yes the 2wire had the best WiFi strength of any I have seen. And you could adjust the signal strength up or down as well. I keep thinking that I should go back to my old 2wire for WiFi.
