i was at a source store and seen they had a amp for cable and was wondering if i was to get this and put it before the splitter would it work with my set up i have

hi - What services do you have? Amplifiers generally aren't needed. I used to install/service for Eastlink. What services do you have? They generally cause more problems.

i have phone and internet but i am the kind to try and get the most out of what i have

Amplifiers can really cause problems with phone and internet. What internet package do you have? Goto http://speedtest.eastlink.ca and click on the province you are in and run the test. Let me know what package you are on and what results you are getting.

If you are getting slow internet speeds, do you have any routers or are you directly connected to the modem? Also is your cable (drop) provided aerial or underground?

For the phone service, are you experiencing any echoing, static or any problems on your line?

What do you mean, "get the most out of what you have"? If everything is working fine now, than no amp is necessary.

As mentioned, drop amplifiers can cause problems with two-way services such as internet or telephony. Especially some consumer amps sold at electronics stores...which aren't always designed for two-way use.

You're not going to improve your internet speeds with an amp, if that was the plan.

my internet is slow most of the time for a 20MB setup and yes i have a belkin wireless N router and its a aerial drop with new line from the road to the house
what i am mostly wanting it for is i was told that if i was to get one it would help me get a few OTA channels if i was to add a line and put it to my TV

If your internet is consistently slow it may be the modem. If there are packet losses, spikes in your service, etc there may be a wiring issue.

What I would recommend is to either a) call Eastlink and have a service tech come out and he can use his meter to check db levels and swap the modem also or b) you might be able to go to your local Eastlink kiosk and exchange the modem however you will have to call in to have it rehit after you plug it in. It won't work until that's done.

With your downstream speed you are getting 80% of max speed which is typically the standard (up to 20mb not a guaranteed 20mb all the time). Your upstream speed is pretty good as well.

In your house do you have any non-Eastlink splitters hooked up? If you just have phone and internet there should probably be a 2-way splitter after the drop coming in and one going to the MTA and the other to your modem.

For OTA adding an amp isn't going to get you those channels. It will just cause you grief with your phone and internet. I would buy an OTA antenna and plug it in to your TV directly.

OTA signals and cable cannot co-exist on the same line. I invite you to visit the Over The Air forum for details on receiving OTA signals.

As mentioned, a service call is likely your best bet. They're free, and if there's an issue, they have the tools to diagnose and resolve it.
