Thumbs up Rogers increased monthly download allowance

I'm on the Express package and I noticed yesterday that my monthly usage allowance was increased from 70 GB to 80 GB. When I checked the packages on Rogers' site today, I saw that all the Internet packages have their allowance increased. Ultimate has a whopping 250 GB. If only Rogers could increase the upload speed too...

Just got a letter from Rogers saying the increase from 70 to 80 gb would take effect June 27.

Of course once again, Rogers will do nothing for their customers who still have a D2 modem. Unless you upgrade to one of their D3 gateways, you will continue to be stuck at 60 GB, while still paying the same price as those with 80 GB.

I am pretty sure that the upgrade to 250 GB happened many months ago - around mid 2011.

Supposedly faster upload speeds are coming and some areas around the GTA have 10Mbps upload for Ultimate. But it requires more network upgrades. See this thread: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=147483

Is there any negatives to upgrading to the new modem? Kinda sceptical that this increase doesn't come with a catch.

Can you just go to a Rogers Plus store to exchange my old DOCSIS 2.0 Modem for the DOCSIS 3.0 modem/router? I would like to take advantage of the updated speeds and bigger bandwidth.

Considering the new price with the old plan, I might as well take advantage of it and switch them? I honestly do not want to call if that is the case, so I just wanted to know.

The D3 modems, both the SMC and the CISCO, have both received a lot of criticism, especially the SMC, for the wireless component which suffer from poor range and dropped connections. If you plan to "upgrade", The CISCO is the better of the two, but no matter which one you get, be prepared to have the unit placed into bridge mode and use your own router.
