Has anyone here set up a Nest 2nd generation thermostat?
I'm thinking of getting one. We have a dual heat system with a heat pump and electric furnace. The website talks about using a professional setup stage in installing the thermostat. I'm struggling with paying $250 (+HST and shipping). I'm hoping to not then have to add on another $100 for installation if it is a do-it-yourself job (with a little help from people here).

Hmm, I was supposed to order one of those last month but haven't gotten around to it yet.
Why do you think you need professional install? Everything I've seen / read seems to indicate the install isn't very complicated. |

Well, for my heat/AC system the Nest install was easy. If you contact Nest support and ask them specifically what about your system would require a professional install, I'm sure they would be able to tell you.
I contacted their support organization once and their answer was quick and articulate. |

"Since making mistakes to the advanced options available in Pro Setup can result in malfunction of your HVAC system, Nest strongly advises that only trained installation professionals use Pro Setup." Our heat pump/electric furnace is considered to be a dual fuel system, so it requires the Pro Setup. Nest strong advice in the second paragraph causes me to consider whether I want to do it myself. My other possible problem appears to by my Netgear WNDR3700 that may be incompatible with the Nest. I'm seeking clarification from Nest and Netgear on that issue.

With an electric furnace (coil located on top), the setup should be similar to dual fuel -> when heatpump can't keep up, electric heat takes over completely
With a normal air handler (coil and elements inside one unit), any 2 stage heat heatpump stat should do the job -> elements can cycle on and off while heatpump still runs. I think the nest can handle the latter, but heatpumps are best left at a constant setting. If you get it, don't use the self-programming feature - hit hold.

Well, I finally got off my butt and picked one of these up (2nd gen).
The install was easy even though I'm a dolt and messed it up the first time. Amazing how one little wire in the wrong spot led it to believe we had a heat pump. Since my SSID is hidden and the password is long / random characters getting this all typed in took some getting used to but I got there in the end. I think it looks great but my wife said it's UGLY! Oh well. |

Question for those of you with a Nest... how responsive is the dial when you turn it? I find it works okay for small adjustments but when I was entering letters i could turn it a few inches or more before it would go to the next letter.
Is this normal? Edit: I just called their support number and spoke with a nice gentleman who told me this wasn't normal. I will be taking my unit back tomorrow for a replacement. |

Replacement installed and it does not suffer from the same issue as the original.
I'm a wiz at installing them now, this one took me about 4 minutes to install even using new mounting holes. |

Yup.
I got mine at Home Depot on Bank St. and the exchange at the Home Depot in Barrhaven. The Barrhaven location had many but the Bank St. location only had the one left that I purchased yesterday. |

I tried to purhcase one at Brockville Home Depot but the guy said all 8 listed in stock were stolen. Somehow I doubt that considering he didnt even know what I was talking about when I first approached him.
They told me to order online, but there is another $8 in shipping being added on for that. Might as well order from nest directly.

The ones I saw in store all had anti-theft devices tied to each box.
