Hi All,
A friend is installing a pool and will need electrical wiring brought underground to a sub panel in the pump cabana. He has been told that the wiring needs to be NMWU and in a PVC pipe buried a minimum of 450mm under the lawn. Must the PVC pipe be rigid or can it be the flexible type? |

It can usually be the flexible pipe than can be purchased in rolls. Check with the local inspection office first.

In the province of Ontario it’s the Law that anything to do with out-door pools, hot tubs, spas, needs to be wired by a licensed electrician, and has to be fully inspected with permits.

Thanks for the replies. Can he take the permit out himself and have any electrician do the work or must the permit be taken out by an electrical contractor specifically?

Typically the contractor does all the arranging of the necessary permits.

I just had mine upgraded because I split my pump house and added a sauna. The 230V service @ 60 amps required very expensive cable ($17/m) but was direct burial rated and did not require conduit.
It is only a few inches below the service, though, certainly not 450mm |

That is not code. It needs to be at lest 18" below.

Taking out the permits on your own can save you a couple bucks as I recently discovered.
When contractor takes out a permit he is charged HST. When he charges you, he charges you HST on top of the HST. |

This got me interested because I plan to build a shed this summer at the back of my lot and I hadn't looked it up yet as I may power it with solar. But according to the ESA, 18" deep is required if there is mechanical protection or is run in a PVC raceway and 24" if not. If it is metal armoured cable or in a PVC raceway and has mechanical protection, it can be buried a mere 12" deep!
