Yea, technically that deal expires but the Blue Jays control the MLB national rights in Canada. They are owned by Rogers. So they will just sell them back to Sportsnet.

And the problem with is, is that they won't get nearly as much as they should like other teams are getting (Rangers/Fox Sports as an example).

Why would they want to? That money goes into some profit sharing. Its easier for them to just transfer money as they need...

Well I'm very happy to have been proven wrong, as Rogers really intends to make the American channel MLB Network available to Canadians next year with CRTC approval. The next big challenge will be to get the other Canadian providers to carry the channel if Rogers gets approval.

If MLB Network comes to Canada, and they show a game and another Canadian station is showing the same game ... does that mean the channel will be blacked out?

Well right now rogers is the only channel that carries baseball so since tigers would own/run advertising on this mlbnetwork channel no blackouts would happen.

I would think if MLB Network showed a Blue Jays game, Sportsnet would get the simsub. I don't know if this would also apply to a Seattle Mariners game if Sportsnet Pacific was showing that game, or a Red Sox or Yankees game on Sportsnet East.

I am happy to see this happening - the problem I have is that Cogeco, very likely, will not add the channel to their lineup. I hope to be proven wrong, though - either that or Rogers can buy them out.

Rogers alreaedy owns 40 percent of Cogeco. I'm sure they would jump at the chance to buy control if the Audet Family is willing to sell out.

MLBN always has a backup game to air in the 2 cities that would be blacked out. So if the Jays were ever on there, we'd probably just get the backup game instead.

Also, again, remember that Rogers through its ownership of the Blue Jays controls all the rights to the distribution of MLB games in Canada. So if games are going to air on MLB Network, Rogers has signed off/agreed to it.

This is fantastic news, however knowing Shaw, I doubt I will see this channel for a long while after it debuts. I just hope the CRTC, Rogers and Shaw all agree upon it before the end of September (one can hope right?) as the World Baseball Classic qualifier from Germany goes then and I'd like to be able to watch Canada's qualifying games.
The drawback to MLB Network being licensed in Canada, if Rogers adds it to their cable system, is that regardless of whether Shaw carries it, I will lose the MLB Network games on MLB.tv. |

You know their is always interventions against the addition of American channels to the lists. Whether or nor the CRTC buys the arguments against is another thing. I do suspect BELL will object because of their ownership in TSN, they will claim it's competitive, and doesn't SHAW have a pending application for a sports channel? They might object too. It's a long process, and i'll be surprised if it gets approved anytime soon.

Shaw is probably not going to be launching that sports channel seeing as how they shut down Fox Sports recently and they don't even carry their own sports channel EuroWorld Sports, nor does it seem to get promoted a whole lot.
As for Bell, they've got nothing to complain about, since they already own a good chunk of sports in Canada and will be getting more soon along with Rogers. Hell, if for whatever reason it doesn't go through, Roger's will just launch their own version since they own a license for it. This is probably just easier for them. Didn't the CRTC loosen restrictions on sports and news channels anyway? |

CBS (College) Sports Network got through the cracks because it (was) niche (i.e. American Collegiate Sports) Big Ten Network got through the cracks because its focused to a very specific segment of the niche (i.e. American Collegiate Sports, only in the Big Ten conference) Golf Channel and NFL Network got through the cracks because its niche and/or devoted to a league only containing American teams. NBA TV is Canadian mainly because it originated as one of MLSE's "team" channels (like LeafsTV) but then diverged into a localized NBA TV. This is probably what Rogers intended to do originally, though. And besides, Rogers could just around Sportsnet's airing of non-Jays games to compliment what's shown on MLB Network. And they only loosened restrictions for mainstream sports channels (i.e. has to be more like TSN/Sportsnet) |
