Sounds like the broadcasters should set up a class action lawsuit against the CRTC, Industry Canada, and the Canadian Government, if they didn't really have spend all that money to digitize the OTA signals but just shut everything down because OTA has no future anyway!!

Default Survey

There are two things that I find really troubling about the shutting down of the transmitters and perceived unimportance of OTA, the first, and as a bilingual Canadian, has to do with access to programming in both official languages inside and outside fo Quebec.

But equally, I am really concerned that the usage statistics used by the CRTC and CBC on OVER THE AIR seem completely pulled OUT of THIN AIR. Which makes me wonder, does anyone know of a think tank or organization or group of business people out there that we could approach and make a case for conducting a REAL legitimate survey? I have worked with survey experts before and I think that this type of survey would not be overly expensive.

If I had a hand in designing the survey, I would make sure that it tests for awareness of OTA, and availability in the subject's region. As such, the presumed lack of awareness and availability would then offer an explanation as to why large swaths of the population do not use OTA, which would also confirm the overall lack of information and misinformation out there, and would in turn reveal the failure of the digital conversion awareness efforts of the Canadian Government.

The Commissioner subsequently launched an investigation and issued a report arguing that the radio broadcasting cuts constituted an infringement on language minority rights under the Official Languages Act. As a result, the Commissioner challenged CBC/Radio-Canada in a federal court case which is still pending.
What's wrong with this picture? A few thousand Francophones in Windsor get their case taken to the supreme court but millions of Anglophones in nearby markets have no recourse. Begging to an uncaring CRTC bureaucracy is not the type of remedy suitable for such situations.

Funny how CBC says OTA is dying technology and yet Radio Canada Toronto 25.1 is testing Mobile Tv broadcasting for mobile devices.Imagine watching HNIC live on your cell phone while riding the bus and not paying your cell provider for internet access.

There are 326 interventions on the CRTC site! Some are from bona fide leaders - the Premiere of the Yukon, the Mayor of Moncton, City of Windsor, Mayor of Tecumseh, some Members of Parliament, some First Nations leaders among them.

I can't imagine the CBC executive expected this. I imagine there are more than a few DHCers among the 326 - thanks for getting involved!

Where on the site can the interventions be viewed?

Also, 326 interventions but if you read some of them (as I did before they got moved), some are FOR and not against the shutdown of the stations.

alebowgm, here: https://services.crtc.gc.ca/pub/List...-7&dt=i&lang=e

Good point that not all 326 are aligned the same way. When there was 20 or so posted I read them all - some looked like they written by Ezra Levant, some were for keeping analog alive forever everywhere, some were for using subchannels for the opposite language (I know both Windsor and Moncton are advocating this), some were for more digital transmitters. But the overwhelming number are for CBC/SRC maintaining an OTA presence in some form beyond the 14 CBC/13 SRC digital transmitters each broadcasting a single channel.

Speaking of the ones written by Ezra Levant, my fav was the one that didn't like the nude Harper painting, arguing that was good enough a reason to shut down the whole operation.

Yep, that was rather funny.... as if the painting controversy has anything to do with CBC analog shutdown... Who is this Ezra Levant anyways...

Between the MPs for Windsor-Essex, Windsor Council and Tecumseh mayor, hopefully the CRTC sees that the shutdown of CBEFT is a bad call.

Definitely not on topic for this thread! You can enter his name into the main search tool of this site and see lots of mention of him in SunTV threads outside of the OTA Forum.

Rhetorical Question: So how does the CBC expect to be a "National Broadcaster" when they won't "Broadcast Nationally"?

I believe the responses and interventions are all part of the CBC's planned response to all their cuts, now that the Stanley Cup is over, I expect HNIC will be next on the chopping block. Stampeder, you thought 326 interventions was impressive!

^^^The CBC couldn't afford to cut HNIC. Not only is it the only program they show that actually makes money but they couldn't afford to buy programming to replace it (we would probably get repeats of The Beachcombers and such).

I can see where the interventions are now. But how do you find the CBC's actual application for which these people are all responding to???

Edit: never mind, dunno how I missed it before, but I finally found it.
