Question Koodo Data Suggestion

I've been with Koodo since Christmas of 2008 and have had pretty good no frills service! My problem now is my desire for more data!

I currently have an unlocked/rooted Samsung Captivate and a Huawei E182E Telus/unlocked data stick working fine with:

$20 Canada Wide Plan (per second billing)
$10 Unlimited Text/Picture Messaging / Caller ID / Voice Mail Addon
$15 500MB Data Addon

$45 before taxes, which comes to exactly $50.85 every month!

When I am on the road with my laptop I often swap my SIM into the data stick for better reception and speeds. Ideally I would love to have a data sharing plan where I can have 2 SIM cards in both my devices all the time and just combine the bandwidth.

Does anyone know if this is possible with Koodo and if there is anyway I can get more data for a reasonable price? I'll gladly pay up to $60-65 a month (total) for 6GB's+!

Have you looked at the data saver plan? You get a low amount to start but it automatically goes up by $5 increments as you use more. It's what we use.

Have a look at their website.

As far as I know, Koodo does not offer any data sharing, so you have to pay for a separate plan to have multiple SIMs. Koodo does have a 2GB data offering, but beyond that your only real option is the data flex plan.

Default Switch Provider Vs Upgrade

I've tried the Data Saver plan where $15 only got me 300MB instead of 500MB raw data, it all depends on where you fit in their Data Saver "range". I am mainly looking for the most bang for my buck, especially when I may need to rely on wireless data for my sole internet connection in the upcoming months.

Koodo's top 2 data plans appear to be $25 for 2GB or the Data Saver; $30 for 3GBs which I'm on the fence of upgrading to.

With all that said about Koodo and their Canada Wide Network... Wind Mobile has been expanding rapidly in the Niagara Region and throughout the Southern Ontario corridor while offering no frills service. One of my best friends consumes on average 15-20GB's a month on his Wind Mobile account.

The big Three, Bell, Rogers and Telus have retention plans... does anyone know if there's a slight chance Koodo will offer me a better deal as I been with them for almost 4 years?

I doubt Koodo will offer a retention plan in the same vein as Bell, Rogers, or Telus, but it's worth a shot.

I was in the same situation a few months ago.
I just ended up getting a "tablet data" plan from Virgin mobile and using that sim exclusively in my laptop. Virgin's tablet flex plan starts at $5 and you get the sim for free.

Since I no longer use my Koodo phone to tether data, it ends up costing me about the same each month. (even though data with Koodo seems to be cheaper)

I see Virgins Tablet Plan is basically:

10MB = $5
250MB = $15
5GB = $35

Do you constantly pay $35 for 5GB's on top of your Koodo bill? hmmm

Sometimes. I usually don't hit the 250MB tier.

The only "real" reason for going with a tablet data plan on top of my koodo plan was convenience. My laptop has a WWAN card built in and a SIM slot.

I suppose it depends on what your usage patterns are. If you only use your laptop on the road for light browsing and work emails infrequently the Virgin plan works great. My monthly bill is usually $15/month.

You could try it out. Virgin sends you the sim card free of charge with no activation fees etc.

Oh cool, that's definitely something to think about... I upgraded to the 2GB add on for $25 half my bill is essentially data compared with my actual service cost :/ I want to have a second SIM card for convenience sake instead of prying open my phone. On the weekends I am random with my usage and 2GB's will do for now however Virgins pricing seems reasonable. I've been with Koodo for so long my tab is positive! it would be nice to have that credit deducted from my bill!
