This time of year, there are usually a number of posts about methods of keeping our picky little Shaw Direct receivers nice and cool in the summer months. So, I wanted to share this:
We recently got a totally cheapo laptop cooling fan on eBay for our laptop. It's a portable fan that opens up like an "X." It costs $1 via Hong Kong, though the shipping was about $3. Anyway, we figured for that price, if it was no good or didn't arrive it was no biggie. We got it the other day (it took under two weeks to arrive) and suddenly realised upon seeing it that it would work great for the 630. And it does. It's really quiet and is basically undetectable just sitting under the 630 since it's so small and isn't a pad. It really does the trick. Today, the 630 was at 42 degrees (which is quite OK, but we were experimenting). Within five minutes of having the fan on, the temperature dropped to 38. Plus since it works via a USB connection, it just plugs into the USB port on the front of the 630. I guess we'll have to buy another one as we still need one for our laptop. :-) Anyway, for us, this definitely saves the space of having a dedicated fan blowing at the 630 over the summer to keep it cooler. Plus it's much quieter than our fan. Now, I've gotten into a bit of trouble in the past when I posted a link here from Shaw Direct. So I don't want to post a link to the specific eBay item. So if someone's interested, I'm going to share the following information and I hope it's OK to do so... You search on eBay for "Folding USB Laptop Notebook Cooler Cooling Pad Fan" and a number of these fans will come up. If you want to use the same seller that I used (as it came as advertised and in about two weeks) you need to go to the advanced search and there's a place to put in specific sellers. If you put in "wangdecheng9898" then you should only have a single result. |

Thanks for the post. Since this is not specific to Shaw Direct, I've moved it to this more general forum. It can be used for any STB, PVR, AVR, Cabinet Vent, Laptop, etc.

Damn Chinese, always making great stuff! I ordered a heatsink from China recently, and it has worked wonders.
