Nimiq 6 can transmit SD & HD, it will certainly use 8PSK for HD which is now the standard for Bell TV.

As pinza said expect hd from the 91 slot , as we speak certain TP at 91 have been inactive for some quite time. That means more channels whether sd or hd coming soon if N6 is successful.

Interesting.
So in other words N4(82) will basically be HD & N6(91)will be HD & SD. One thing,i'm not that skilled at this but by having HD & Sd on the same sat will that not dimmision PQ on N6 for both HD & SD? Which ever the case I just hope we see signals like we get from N4(82) 95-100% on all TRS. |

No, having both or either makes to difference on PQ, it is up to Bell to decide how much bandwidth allocate to the channels which then in turn determines how many channels can be on each transponder..

The sats can broadcast EITHER SD or HD at the flick of a switch or two, they are NOT dedicated to one format. A Transponder can broadcast in MPEG2 or MPEG4, not BOTH.
Bell used the birds at 82 for SD & HD almost from the start, this is nothing new at all. PQ is dependent on the algorithms used by Bell during the encoding process, not the TP used. |

I'll try this again as my last post was deleted for being apparently off topic.
I'm very disappointed that the footprint of this new satellite is much reduced. I can see no advantage to the new sat. for me personally though I understand the technical reasons for launching it. I spend 5 months of the year in the southern USA and I've started looking at alternatives to BellTV. |

The satellites at 91W are being replaced as they near the end of their life expectancy, plus one has been operating at reduced capacity and power since partial failure.
Fine tuning of the signal footprint is probably to enhance east/west and northern signal coverage.

You are breaking the terms set out by Bell in their Customer Service Agreement by watching Bell TV in America. The advantage is that we in Canada will get a more powerful satellite and theoretically less rain fade with Nimiq 6 than currently. Reception in the States should NEVER have been expected or relied upon, personally I am glad to see the reduced footprint of Nimiq 6. |

OK, USA reception (outside the footprint) is discussed in other threads. If you're interested in Satellite alternatives from Canada, there is only Shaw Direct. See the following threads:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=62645 Shaw Direct South of Canada http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=120768 BTV South of Canada Can we now stick to the topic?

I too am very anxious about the new 91 bird and can't wait to see the difference. As for the footprint I think it's a good thing. After a Canadian company distributing signal in Canada should offer the best possible here.
Shawdirect will be doing the same. Does anyone know where it is now. Last time it was at 138. |
