corrupt unit id's are a result of a few different things, all related to power, or lack of it. True if the internaal battery dies and the receiver is unplugged the older models will lose or change their id's making them temporarily useless. Power surges, cut in the power, pulling the receiver from the wall without turning it off, can also cause this to occur. it is not a "known" issue, or a fault with the machines. they are designed this way. Most frequent causes are lack of care with regards to surge protectors or powering the device off before removing the cable. The MRC charge is not a life time guarantee on your equipment. It is a multiple receivere charge for having more than one receiver, and as a courtesy The company will exchange receivers that become faulty or develop technical problems, and replace your origional receiver with a reconditioned used receiver of like model or better. The $13.99+tx delivery is always applied and customers are responsible for it. When you purchase the receivers you own the equipment. the multiple receiver charge is not a life time guarantee, and in fact does not cover damage to receivers from things such as power surges, lightning, fried receivers...etc. The fact that your dvr had a corrupt unit id is highly unusual, and mostly likely a result of a care issue., the receivers do not just lose or change id. Something external causes this. The older legacy receivers, yes this occurs as a result of the receivers age. New receivers.....not likely. You could have a winge and complain about paying a delivery charge, and will most likely have it waived, once off. corrupt id, power failure as a result of surge , storm ...etc, indicates that the receiver was not protected, and the customer is accountable. If your TV or stereo is fried at the same time , do you have a cry to sony for replacements? no you purchase a new one and have your insurance cover you. The dsr 505 and dvr530 are very sensitive to power fluctuations or inconsistencies...use surge protectors, not "power bars" they are not the same. you may have a surprise if you call up and say that your receiver will not power on ...the power went out, now my receiver will not turn on....invariably the response will be...you will need to buy another.

Motorola calls is "strategic suicide" the digicipher receivers are prone to unreasonably premature failures - however it is considered a reasonable cost of doing business as digicipher has never been compromised.
The first step in hacking a security system is to remove the eeproms and dump them and reverse engineer them. On a digicipher device there is nothing to dump remove all power and you have a brick. The boards are factory repairable - but the tools are more secured than fort knox. The situation is most annoying when a receiver has died on the shelf unactivated since it isn't always obvious when it isn't just a matter of the box claiming a different identity than the one activated on the account. One instance was particularly frustrating when a CSR decided a receiver reporting a different UA than labeled had to be a tampering issue. A damn good time to know a fairly senior starchoice person! The $13.99 charge doesn't really bother me, I just with you could do over the counter exchanges in Calgary like you can with Shaw Cable devices.

We had an extended power outage and one 505 (hooked to another subscriber) has failed to reinitialize. It shows authorization as U rather than S.
Is there something that SD can do to restart it? |

try pulling the power plug for 1 whole minute first, then power it back up. put it on a channel that will work for free such as 351 or 354 just to verify that it is working fine, then check your subscribed channels. you can then choose the phone or online option to send a signal refresh to your receivers and if the trip count goes up on the system status screen you should have programming. if the trip count doesn't move then possibly the ua # was corrupted, check to see if the numbers match on the system status screen and the sticker on the back of the receiver

How long can this battery last generally if the unit is unplugged for a prolonged period. I have the option on a used box and want to find out if I am just asking for problems. I believe the UA number is printed on the back of the unit and it will match the one on the systems screen. If they match everything should be ok Correct?

I reckon the battery should last better than 5 years, likely more than 10.
Yes, if the UA on the label matches the screen, you are good. |

A few months ago I had an issue with my 630 so another one was shipped out. The replacement had a mismatched UA, Of course another unit was shipped out with out issue. So I know a UA mismathc can happen right from the self. Its good to know that with the right programming level ShawDirect and Shaw Cable, backs their services and equipment and will send a replacement to keep the customer up with very little down time.
