I have a water heater that just doesn't want to ignite after lunch today. The exhaust fan kicks in and it tries to light and then goes out and gives error 6 which is the maximum number of ignition retries or recycles has been reached and system is in lockout.
I unplugged and tried again but no luck. I had this happen before and the water heater was under a year old and replaced by the retail store. I would hate to have to spend another $1000 on this heater. Please help |

LEss then a year old?
-Flame rod is likely not dirty but I have seen many out of position with the burner from the factory. may just need adjustment -HSI or hot surface ignitor may be cracked. -gas supply on? Meter still on? Gas bills paid and uptodate?

I took the exhaust pipe off as well as the intake air pipe. I blew them both out with air. I then reattached and tried it. I did the first failed attempt so I held the one side of the tank off the floor about an inch thinking maybe it wasn't level. It then lit up. I put a block under it.
Last night I heard the heater try twice before lighting. This morning it won't light and gives same error code. How do you adjust the flame rod? is there a diagram? My last tank only lasted 4 months. |

The best option is to call a tech to make sure the install is to code and check the flame rod.
It shouldn't be an expensive fix - a new tank isn't needed.
