It is a start, and I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that. Now, they need to expand it to places people actually go, like Polo Park, St. Vital Centre, or The Forks. Downtown (specifically Portage & Graham) and the new Rapid Transit stations would also be great spots, as you'd get all the commuters.

Default Only ShawOpen available — no more ShawSecure WiFi for now

Thos who've used the Shaw WiFi network may have noticed there is no more ShawSecure network. According to Shaw's FAQ:
Quote:
What happened to ShawSecure as a login option for the Shaw Exo WiFi Trial?
We are currently exploring options to deliver enhanced security and have removed the ShawSecure network for the time being.
Your login process has been simplified. You can now access the Shaw Exo WiFi Trial using the ShawOpen network in the same way at all existing locations.

Thanks for the update.

2 weeks ago at Shaw 32 Ave NE Calgary location, I was wondering why Shaw Secure is not available.

CED has a new article out: http://www.cedmagazine.com/news/2012...learning-curve

Quote:
Shaw’s stated goal with its Exo Wi-Fi service is to have it duplicate customers’ data speeds at their home locations, whether it’s 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps. Having fiber in 98 percent of its footprint allows Shaw the flexibility to match, for the most part, those home speeds

Coverage in edmonton's LRT would be amazing! so much of it is underground with no celluar service. I could see people switching from telus to shaw because they could access the internet during the morning commute. I know i would consider it.

from what i understand the equipment shaw is using already handles hand-off between wireless hotspots.

Got an e-mail from Shaw a few days ago, stating that the download speed and number of devices allowed to automatically connect will depend on what your Shaw internet package is, starting Tuesday, May 15. That's tomorrow.
Here's some pertinent info from the e-mail.

Quote:
Starting May 15, 2012 the Internet speed and number of mobile devices you can register with the Shaw Exo WiFi Trial will depend on your Shaw residential Internet package. …
As part of this update, your Shaw Exo WiFi Trial connection will be temporarily disrupted from 9 p.m. MT on Monday, May 14 through the morning of Tuesday, May 15. We apologize for this inconvenience.
In the future, if you would like to use additional mobile devices beyond the number already included with your Internet package, you can sign in each time you connect at a Shaw Exo WiFi zone.

I was at Market Mall in Calgary yesterday and I noticed that ShawOpen was popping up in numerous places in the Mall, despite the mall and it tenants not being on the list for available wifi hotspots on Shaw's website and their Wifi app.

It looks like Shaw might be testing it out, but Market Mall looks like it is coming online for the next Shaw Wifi hotspot.

*Edit: Also, noticed that Northland Mall also has ShawOpen in areas of the mall where tenants are not listed on the wifi hotspots on Shaw's website and their Wifi app. Looks in general that regional malls are coming online.

3/4 of a year since inception and Red Deer has one measly wifi spot. This is in an industrial area where it's mostly useless.
You'd think they could afford a couple more for Alberta's third largest city.

pi-ti-ful.

Default shaw exo wifi and google navigation

I know I'm late to the party.
Still:
I live in Martindale, Calgary, and I started the Shaw Exo Wifi app for android (Nexus 7) and then started Google navigation. I typed in the address for a hair salon for my monthly haircut. Haircut completed, I checked the Nexus 7 and I was automatically connected to a Shaw exo hotspot. I typed in my next destination in Google navigation and it guided me to my next destination for a flu shot. Flu shot completed, I, again was automatically connected to another Shaw exo hotspot and I typed in my home address. On arrival home, I was connected to my home Wifi.

This was a test of Shaw Exo Wifi and Google Navigation working together. In this instance it was flawless. Still, Shaw Exo is a work in progress. It needs many more locations. Nonetheless it was fun!!

Dr Dave...

I have BB50 at home and my local gym is a Shaw WiFi hotspot. When I log into it with my iphone, do you know what kind of speeds I am supposed to get thru it?

Thanks,
TKDragon

TKDragon, I just copied that info from Shaw. It says that if you have BB50 you can access Shaw WiFi with 10 different devices. It doesn't say anything about the speed you get, but you would get typical WiFi speeds that depend on how many other users were using that hotspot.

The speeds listed above are top speeds under ideal conditions.
From my real-world experience, the speed available depends heavily on how many other users you're sharing the WiFi with. Often, when I'm in one of the Shaw WiFi zones around my neighbourhood, I don't even bother. my smartphone's mobile Internet is usually more reliable and gives better speed.
