Don't you mean ATSC-M/H transmitters? I mean you can buy --albeit-- somewhat expensive Mobile DTV handheld TVs (search on Amazon).

I'm talking about widely available receivers, in places like Best Buy/Future Shop/Source/London Drugs.

Or better yet, from Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, etc.
Off topic, but I often thought the Blackberry Playbook would have done better if it included a ATSC-M/H receiver as it would be a distinguishing feature from all the other tablets. The ability to watch live TV anywhere you go for free on your tablet would give them a big boost, even if it is currently only available in certain American markets.

It would also be a neat Canadian solution. If my guess is correct, and broadcasters could add an M-H copy of their main channel with no additional licensing requirements from the CRTC, it could be "quick" to implement. Most stations seem to have a spare Mb/s or two of bandwidth to donate to an M-H parade (it uses chunks of 917 kb/s). Gives Shaw a free mobile presence in the East.

Well finally got around to looking for one of those Hauppauge Aero-M devices. Found one online at Frys for 60 bux (Best Buy and others were more expensive), figured why not, we'll give it a shot. No M-H around here, but saw that there seems to be some linux development ongoing for it, one feature of which is it'll do European DVB-T as well as ATSC and
ATSC M-H (the Windows Driver apparently does not do DVB-T). Not that I'll ever use DVB-T but sounds cool... The last thing to confirm before buying one was if it had an external antenna port. Would be useless to me without one and isn't specified or obvious on the Hauppauge website. Found a review tonight which clearly pointed out that it does, with a supporting photo so that was the kicker. It should be on the way now...May provide some feedback here once it does show up and we've had some time to play.

Support for the Aero-M was added in linux kernel 3.2.
Got linux kernel 3.2.9 compiled so now I have a linux driver for this device and can play around with it. Note that it creates two frontends. One for ATSC (frontend0), and another for DVB-T (frontend1). dmesg snippet Code:

Was able to get a nice lock on WKYC from Cleveland tonight, which means I was able to try and tune in an ATSC MH station for the first time. The provided Hauppauge WINTV SW was able to scan in WKYC-MH 3.1 no problem, but so far was unable to play it after having scanned it in.
Not sure, but it's possibly codec related, since ATSC MH is using H.264. In the settings, Wintv seems to like Arcsoft H264 codec, and it's the only choice available for H.264 codecs. Even though I have other H264 capable codecs installed on the machine. I could be missing something, as I don't delve in Win7 very much these days. Just enough to play with this device from time to time. So far not looking good for me with MH. But overall it still seems like a nice tuner so far. Time will tell if I ever get it figured out.

WKYC is probably encrypted for the DyleTV service.
I also have an Aero-M and it's useless for the encrypted signals. I emailed Hauppage support back in the winter about the encryption issue and they never responded. |

Thanks, I was kinda thinkin the same thing in the back of my mind at the time, but had never heard anyone else playing with them so didn't even bother asking if that could be the case.

I suspected that smartphone options were in the works, as there is very little available in the standalone ATSC-M device market. Though I believe a subscription-based business plan will be a hard sell...considering that the content is already available free over-the-air.
