I've done my homework. I may pay about 10-15 dollars more a month with Eastlink over Shaw Direct, but I get way more HD channels (including the NFL Network HD), I get a college sports package with the Super Sports Package and I don't have to worry about losing signal strength every time in rains.
I haven't made a decision yet, but Eastlinks new upgrades are making me think it's time to switch.

I'm not in Sudbury, but in Timmins.

As for your question about HD simsubs. Simsubs started in September for the HD east channels. However I've noticed, and a few others that there are very few if any now. I record all primetime programming on the U.S. nets and I haven't seen a simsub in a couple of weeks now. (YAY) I believe that our U.S. nets from Detroit were originating from the London area since there were ads on for Kitchener and London based businesses showing on CTV and CTV2. I'm specualting that EastLink is now receiving them in Sudubry via satellite or through an untouched fiber feed and sending them clean through their fiber network to our system. There is no HD or digital OTA anywhere in NE Ontario so the HD signals from the US nets should be clear from simsubs, IMO.

However, that doesn't mean that it won't happen again though.

frosty...I tried to look at see what Bell TV would cost me just for fun and I can't find out. Bell can't tell me what services are available to me whether I use a postal code or phone number and I can't do anything else from there. Strike One....

Thanks denben, In case you are interested, I pay about $110 a month for Shaw Direct, but that includes $30 a month for the NFL/NHL package.
I don't get as many HD channels as Eastlink tho (about 34). And I have issues in the summer with satelite signal when it rains.
If you hate simsubs I wouldn't recommend Bell, they simsub EVERYTHING. It's why I chose Shaw over Bell to begin with.

I just called and got a great deal, and what's nice is, I don't pay any extra for HD. Yes, they have HD only packages, but when I asked about them, they told me they are free with the PVR rental. My bill, with 6 themes, all 4 HD themes, 3 HD recievers and one HD PVR rental is about $80 a month. And what's nice is, I turned all 3 HD recievers into a PVR with external drives.

Paying 19 bucks a month for the HD PVR rental and then paying for HD programming on top of that seems ridiculous to me. With Bell, I struck a deal where the HD PVR is free for 36 months, then I own it after that. So in 3 years, it's a free PVR. Sorry, but Eastlink doesn't compare.

And on the topic of simsubs, it's never bothered me and I don't even notice tbh. I kinda chuckle a bit when people say the reason they won't switch to a certain provider is because of simsubs. Really? Commercials? It seem they have sim subs down to a science now, and I haven't missed any programs because of it. But that's just me.

Wow, can't complain about that cost. They'll give everything away to get you to sign up then after the intro pricing. WHAM! Hey, EastLink is no different. It's all about getting customers to move from the competition to you. Rarely ever do anything for current subs.

We almost (and I mean very close) went to Bell in 2005. We didn't and got a dual tuner DVR (DCT6412 Phase 1) with Persona to try it out. History now... I'm on the forth unit now.

Simsubs don't usually bother me. When the HD ones were happening, CITY-TV was always having audio issues on BOTH channels. Some shows run overtime and screw up the show that should be starting, etc.

simsubs should be banned, you're not getting what you've paid for..Half the fun watching the Superbowl is the multi million dollar commercials, but instead, getting nothing but CTV endless promotional propaganda of their network, which I NEVER WATCH...so you're paying for NBC HD east and west HD feeds but getting nothing but CTV programing is fraud as far as I'm concerned

After about 3 months of no more simsubs on HD channels, they are back.

There is no reason for this, We have no OTA HD signals around here.

Just got CSR playing stupid.

I tweeted about it last year and they said they were obligated. I then replied with my "for SD yes, not HD"....didn't hear anything back.

Like I get the reason why it's done and that EastLink is obligated IF we had local HD channels here. Hell, I'd forgive it even if Sudbury was digital and HD OTA. But the closest HD OTA to us in Ontario is in Barrie. I guess they just feed us there feeds for SW Ontario which would be simsubbed and it's too bad for us up here.

It's not the end of the world but I really miss the "on the next episode of..." mind you the season is wrapping up. Watched Criminal Minds from Wednesday, with CTV2 from Windsor hijacking CBS Detroit. Though I have to admit the PQ was stunning, well at least for the non-flashback parts of the episode.

PSG., know you're in Sudbury now. Just checked older posts.

I've now tried 3 times to call Eastlink to get an explanation about the simsubs and all I've got is CSR playing stupid and wanting to transfer me to tech support because I "must be having some sort of technical issue."

There must be a better way to voice my displeasure. Anyone have a number or email to someone I can complain to.
I'd rather not go through the hassle of canceling with Eastlink and rejoining Shaw....but I may have no choice. At least my satellite dish is still up.

Come to think of it, it is possible that EastLink isn't subbing them at all. Since we see all the Rogers ads on A&EHD, TLCHD and such makes me think that it is Rogers doing it and EastLink just passes them on to us. If it is Rogers, EL proved that it could be avoided though since we didn't have them (simsubs) for a few months.

The simsubbing has been messing with the audio sync in Timmins, noticed it on Fox HD for House on Monday and Glee last night. Forces me to switch to watching on a Canadian network anyway. Probably a tactic for getting people to stop watching the american channels altogether.

Can someone tell me if the following is even allowed:

I am in Sudbury and tonight, Wednesday, May 16 Criminal Minds on CBSHD is being simsubbed onto CTV2HD.
The problem is, CTV2HD isn't even offered by Eastlink in Sudbury. How is that allowed?
Ive been going back an forth with Eastlink via email about the simsubbing and they keep claiming to me that the CRTC is mandating they simsub HD in Sudbury. I don't believe that to be true.
