Newbie to HDTV (Through DVDr?) - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

Have a Sony KDL46EX621
Feeding from Dish STB Mostly HD
Some channels are SD
Presently feeding TV with HDMI cable from STB
Would I be better feeding TV from my upconverting DVD PVR (Pioneer)?
No HDMI input connection to PVR only component(RCA)
Suggestions please. Thanks

Very unlikely - best to go directly to the TV. I'm sure the DVD recorder would be SD, so you certainly cannot go "through" it for HD. See the following on upconversion:

PVR is Pioneer DVR-460H-K. It's ouput is HDMI 1080p so I believe it is HD but not sure what happens when connected "through" it. No HDMI input only red white yellow or Svideo inputs. If the unit unconverts from SD that would maybe help those signals but how would it affect the HD signals

The TV or the STB already upconvert the SD (per the FAQ). By going "through" the DVDr, a few people have reported a slightly better picture for SD, but it's usually not the case.

The HD would be downconverted to SD since composite or S-video are only SD connections, therefore the HD would suffer tremendously. Also, even though the DVDr has an HDMI out, it's not HD, it's upconverted SD. A huge difference. DVDs are SD, although they can look pretty good once upconverted.

So from this I guess the best HD comes from a STB or OTA connection?Are there HD PVRS? Are all DVDs SD? The more I learn the less newbie I will be. Thanks

Yes, all commercial DVDs are SD. Blu-ray is HD.
