Default lost audio on backups on hdd

i have a freeagent 500g external drive going thru a wdtv into a samsung lcd. The other night i tried to watch a movie with the kids and no audio. tried unplugging the drive, hdmi, wdtv, usb... nothing. also tried plugging the drive into the tv directly thru the usb port on it and still nothing. we have had this happen on the odd file before but it always self corrects or something. has anyone had this or know why it would happen? we have 300+ gigs of tv shows and backups on the drive that are kinda useless.
any advice is appreciated

If the files are still playing on your TV, it doesn't sound like it's your HDD. Do the files play ok on your computer?
