Default Canada needs Midnight Radio Program

.... A national after midnight talk program . I cant take any more "near death stories" or U.F.O sightings in area 51", that coast to coast has to offer. It seems that every talk station in Canada airs this show after midnight just cause it is cheap. If you want to listen to late night talk in Canada that is what you get. Give a few bucks to a canuck that can talk about our issues. across the country. TSN and sportsnet do it for sports. lets do it for news talk.

Agreed. There's gotta be another "George Strombolopolous" type character in this country. Not everybody that is up late at night or into the wee hours of the morning are prepared to talk about the topics that roblau004 mentioned above.

Please - Not Canadian politics talk shows on the radio at night.

You should hear the political *NOISE* and propaganda coming from across the border - regularly - at night.

Esp. right now with that U.S. Party "convention" going on.

[ Quirks and Quarks Science program is replayed on CBC Radio One, I think Monday nights 11pm to midnight - but that might be too scientific/nerdy/techie for many.

As it Happens and The Current on CBC some evenings can be good.

All depends on your tastes / what subjects you're interested in.

With my old work shift ... I used to drive between Ottawa and Kingston late evenings - and would tune and listen to that stuff in the car.

Cross Country Checkup (CBC) with Rex Murphy is only on Sunday nights now,
but he would be an excellent choice as a host for a late night national radio talk show. This quick-witted and accomplished broadcaster can talk intelligently on almost any topic, but with the cutbacks at the CBC, it is not likely to happen, unless the CBC can talk Rex into doing it just for the fun of it. :-)

As well as host of Cross Country Checkup, Mr. Murphy contributes weekly TV essays on diverse topics to CBC TV's The National. At The National's website there are videos of Rex's TV commentaries.

Given the OP's location the options for U.S. signals are pretty low unless he was to drive out far away from Edmonton, in which case it may be possible when conditions are right to get the big AM stations from Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, and maybe even LA or San Francisco. Still, that doesn't help for Canadian content.

Alas, the audience numbers over night do not seem to be enough for Canadian radio execs and bean counters to show concern for.

There would be too much "noise" in the data due to AM nighttime skip combined with low response numbers over that time period.

Probably too much workload to sort it all out... :-)

CKO Radio use to have a program like this in the eighties if I remember correctly, use to be pretty good depending on who was hosting and what the topic was. Might have been late evening rather than midnight come to think of it...

That's the first name I thought of too. "Dispatches" would be an excellent choice as well. But they're done in June. I don't get why the CBC would cancel that (and earlier) the Point but will leave dreck like Q to flourish.

*end rant*
