It's kind of a Catch 22 thing. The 'new channels' in some areas are dependent on DNU so reporting that DNU has been completed and activated also provides the new channels. See what I mean? I get what you are saying though.

^ Zap2It also shows Nat Geo Wild on the same channels for Calgary. Says "Sign Off" as the program description right now.

National Geographic Wild just became available in Winnipeg on Ch 178 SD and 255 HD.

It aslo seems to be MPEG4 since my DCX 3400 is the only one that is recieving it with both picture and sound. My DCT 6412 only has the sound and no video.

^^^
I just confirmed exactly that with Shaw Chat. I have a 6416 Mk III and a 3416 and both give me audio only, no video on CH255. Seems the requirement is STBs with MPEG4 capability which the 3400 has. SD 178 works but the picture is atrocious - pillarboxed.

I certainly hope that they do not continue to add channels with this requirement

I just checked here in Victoria and 255 is labeled "Channel 255.1 (TBA)" but works just fine.

Go lion go, don't let the crocodile get you while your crossing the riv........too late.

Just got NGeo Wild on Shaw Hamilton 187(SD) and 262(HD) and the HD channel is audio only, I guess my Pace box isn't compatible. Shaw offering any sort of trade in program for this?

Discussed in this thread:

Short answers are: appears more and more will be mpeg4 and no trade ups from hd box to another hd box but possibly from sd box to hd one.

HTH.

I am now receiving Nat Geo Wild in SD on channel 175 here in Edmonton as of yesterday (May 7th). Any word of when it will come to Edmonton in HD? What about Movie Central 2 and 3? Will they require MPEG-4 hardware?

Having said that, I am one of the users who is affected by not having MPEG-4. I bought my Motorola DCT3416I directly from Shaw in the spring of 2008 for $732 including GST. Been a subscriber of Shaw for many, many years and also have phone and Internet through them. Account is always current and never in arrears. I'm even a member of Shaw Friends. Despite this, they flat-out refuse to work with me on upgrading my DCT3416 to something that can handle MPEG-4 unless I just want to trade it for a second Gateway portal if I decide I want that. Well that does me no good because I live on my own in a place that is under 500 square feet. So I'm sure you can appreciate that I am pretty angry about this. I would switch to Telus but they do not offer TV in my building. It would be nice to get other channels too such as radx and the Hollywood Suite.

Guess I should have bought that DCX3400 when Best Buy and London Drugs had it during Boxing Week 2011 for $200 less than the current price!

It doesn't surprise me that shaw won't absorb the cost of upgrading all the non-mpeg4 boxes to mpeg4 boxes. That's probably a big chunk of change. When shaw determines their pricing they don't include the cost of hardware. (IE hardware is mostly paid for directly by the customer, not by shaw.). The advantage is that you don't have to sign long term contracts like you do with Telus.

You would think that Shaw makes enough money to cover it. I imagine though, the cost of replacing all the mpeg2 boxes would be in the 10's of millions of dollars. It might be minute for one client, but it would be substantial for all of them.

Does shaw no longer offer buy back on old hardware? I think i used to have a 3412 and wanted to upgrade to the pvr version. They bought back my 3412 for $200 and bought a 3416 for about 350ish? It was about 5 years ago but it helped. I'm not sure if they would still do that. They probably don't want to refurb mpeg2 boxes anymore?
