Default HBO 24/7: Toronto Maple Leafs/Detroit Red Wings OFFICAL THREAD

Well, it looks like the Leafs agreed to do it. There was some concern they wouldn't. The Wings announced at the Press Conference that they would do it, if asked.

The Maple Leafs will get their HBO close-up.

NHL chief operating officer John Collins confirmed Tuesday that the TV documentary series HBO 24/7: Road To The NHL Winter Classic will be back for a third season. The Leafs and Detroit Red Wings will face off in the next Winter Classic, Jan. 1 at the University of Michigan’s Big House, which holds more than 100,000.

“We’re bringing it back,” Collins told the Yahoo! blog site Puck Daddy, adding a Canadian network carrier is on board.

I figured HBO Canada was going to air it as in years past, but perhaps one of CBC/Bell/Rogers has picked it up... Given the language and graphic nature of the show, I would not want to see a censored version.

Glad to see Detroit being featured. HBO does a great job. If it's not on HBO Canada then it's not worth watching.

Default Rating Numbers?

I am curious how the rating for this will pan out for HBO. I suspect they will get a huge boost in numbers just for having T.O. on the show. Even if the American audiance dwindles, I think ratings will still be up.

Good or bad/logical or not - the Leafs certainly have a huge fan base in Ontario and accross Canada. More than Rangers or Flyers from last year.

Why? I watched it on RDS last year. Except for French narration, instead of English, it was unedited. There were ads, but each broadcast was 75 minutes long, I think.

I'd think it will be on HBO Canada though.

It varied. I think most first broadcasts were after Habs games. Some repeats aired in the afternoon and early evening though.

So at the upfronts yesterday Rogers announced they secured the rights to air HBO 24/7 on both Sportsnet and CityTV.

Can't find a press release on it but it was discussed briefly on PTS at the 28 minute mark. John Shannon made note that there is likely to be editing for the language!

So I am guessing that means HBO Canada won't have it, which just seems odd.

This is stupid. Half the reason people like this series is because it's uncensored, unless CityTV plan on showing at 2am so they can run it properly.

I don't think you will have to. In the past they showed up on youtube a couple hours after they aired.

They'll have to edit it for time if they're going to fit it in an hour time slot with commercials.

If anyone thinks what you have been watching so far has been totally uncensored, you are mistaken. There is no way the league would allow some of the things said in the heat of battle out there for public consumption. Its simply a matter of leaving "just enough" in to make it seem as if the viewers are getting the "inside" version.

Speaking of documentaries, Sportsnet has added the HBO 24/7 series to its stable this season. The significant documentary that every year follows two teams headed to the Winter Classic game has redrawn the formula for the NHL in terms of support in the United States, winning Emmys and creating a new perspective for the league by showing its players behind the scenes. Films like 24/7 are redefining how sports leagues promote themselves.

Although not a huge ratings grabber, 24/7 is a prestigious product for Sportsnet to wrest away from TSN. Especially this fall with a Toronto Maple Leafs-Detroit Red Wings matchup, having the Canadian rights will be significant. The major question for 24/7 this season will be what happens if the coming collective agreement talks between the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association cancel any or all of the 20012-13 season? Sportsnet officials would not speculate publicly, but sources tell Usual Suspects that the network is confident the labour talks will wind up in time for the regular season at the latest. Play would likely need to resume by Dec. 1 to gather material for four documentaries in time for the Winter Classic.
