Added today: Ch. 263 - EuroNews

Part of the World News Pack and is in freeview until July 31st.

It's interesting in the fact that the channel is 480p SD and in true 16:9. It's the only SD channel I have that fills my TV screen.

This channel doesn't really interest me, since it is only offered in SD, and doesn't even have CC of their programming, at least when I checked. (BBC World News is another channel with no CC) But it is good that Eastlink is offering it anyway. It is on channel 148 in Halifax.

I am still puzzled as to why Eastlink stilll doesn't offer The Weather Network in HD. Many other providers carry that one, and since Eastlink is normally pretty good about offering HD, this is a puzzle that Eastlink is "late to the plate".

I only wish that Eastlink would reach an agreement with Bell Media to carry channels such as Space HD, Discovery HD, and Bravo HD. For all intensive purposes, I have given up on seeing that happening any time soon, if ever.

In other stuff, National Geographic Wild launches on Monday. I wonder if Eastlink will carry this one.

Default Much HD

I see Much HD is back on the guide in the Bridgewater area. It's showing unauthorized but let's see if it stays put this time. They added it back when they added all our missing HD channels but then removed it the next day.

eastcoast gal, hope it stays this time and becomes viewable of course.

David,

I tweeted EastLink RE: Nat Geo Wild yesterday, "stay tuned for more new content". At least it's more than two words now.

Euronews is not my kind of channel either but any added content is good.

As for The Weather Network HD, you know I'd like to see it too but I've got a feeling we won't be seeing that until local info is on the HD channels also. I'm thinking that there is much more work involved in setting that up too, you'd have to have a PMX setup at every head end. I'm speculating that it is more work and time involved but I don't know for sure. I haven't bugged the Twitter person for awhile on that one.

As for the Bell thing, I think they would have to reach a deal sometime. I wonder if there currently is a deal still in place for the currently carried channels....I hope so.

I'd love to be able to see what each side is offering. Hypothetically, maybe we would be telling EastLink, "That's all they are asking for?? TAKE THE DEAL!" Or maybe we might be telling Bell to shove it.

Oh, as for Timmins' missing HD content...they are estimating within 30 days so sometime this month. I have no idea if there are other Ontario systems affected by this too.

I did, in fact, see your tweet on Eastlink's Twitter page this AM, denben73. Although I don't have my own Twitter account, I do check Eastlink's page regularly, since questions asked there, along with Eastlink's answers to them, are always interesting.

Naturally, the whole Bell Media thing concerns me, especially if an agreement cannot be reached. That was the whole reason for those expedited CRTC hearings held back in March, to which I provided a link earlier in this thread. Naturally, no confidential stuff, such as wholesale rates, could be posted there, but a feel for Bell's demands, as well as what the Independent Distributors Group (Eastlink is a member of that group) wanted, could be ascertained if one reads through the documents posted on the CRTC page. Naturally, the CRTC's final decision heavily favoured Bell, as most CRTC decisons regarding anything Bell related tend to do. Negotiations after that decision, are basically back to "square one". One of the things of concern was high interest rates being asked for by Bell, for any of their channels being carried "out of contract", while negotiations are still underway.

I am sure that Bell could eventually force their hand and make Eastlink remove channels such as TSN, Space, and Bravo from their lineup if a settlement cannot be reached soon.

It's up and running now but I'm a bit long in the tooth for Much Music (is it even still called that). Still the more HD the better.

It is a bit disappointing that it doesn't look as though Eastlink will be carrying National Geographic Wild, which launched several days ago. It is a bit surprising, since Eastlink is normally pretty good about picking up Shaw owned stations.

Perhaps Eastlink doesn't even know that this channel exists.

Default HD Channels

I believe its time that Eastlink joins the rest of the Major Companies and start buying/purchasing channels. Rogers own citytv, Bell owns all the stations that I watch and well shaw owns the rest it seems. If Eastlink would partner up with SYFY then we would pretty much have the space channel that bell offers. Not sure how to fix the discovery problem and as for Bravo, well they offer most of the Lifetime shows so Eastlink should partner with them. that way eastlink can say shove it. Look at FX Canada, and Global Reality and TWN HD those are 3 channels that bell doesn't carry. So maybe its time for eastlink to start its own competition. Sure they would have to go through the CRTC but in the end maybe it would be worth it. Just an idea.

I am surprised that Eastlink has not added the Nat wild station as well, but maybe this means that Eastlink is going to add some new hd.

Like some of you I would like to see SPACE BRAVO AND Discovery for sure. As for TWN that would be an added bonus. it will save me from watching the sd channels thats for sure.

I would think that Nat Geo Wild will come our way sometime. Is anyone else but Shaw carrying this yet?

If I had Discovery HD, Comedy Network HD (doesn't exist), TWN HD and TVTropolis HD (doesn't exist) - I'd be SD free.

You raise some excellent points there, Liv1984, and Esatlink is probably big enough for now that they could probably join "the big leagues", and purchase a few channels of their own, rather than letting Bell buy, and take over most everything. That WOULD give them more clout, and enable Eastlink to get better deals from the owners. Regarding SyFy, we will never see that in Canada, since it is not licensed to be carried here.

For all intensive purposes, I have given up on the Bell Media situation, and cannot see an agreement any time soon for Eastlink to carry any more of their channels. The most we can hope for is that we don't lose what we already have. At least Eastlink does carry most of the Shaw Media channels, though, since Shaw seems "easier" to negotiate with. Also, Eastlink is pretty good about picking up Rogers owned channels.

I STILL remain puzzled as to why Eastlink doesn't carry The Weather Network in HD, though. It could be related to the difficulty in adding local forecasts, but even without those, it would be nice to see the national forecasts, and "weather news" in HD.

OK...I have to say this:

"EastLink, just sign the freaking deal with Bell Media!" Everyone else is happy with it. What is the hold up? Are they asking EL to move a channel or two to the basic tier? The vast majority of customers wouldn't be affected.

According tho the IPG, new (to Canada) eps of Mythbusters start in two weeks.

I agree with you 100% denben73! Surely, Eastlink can make use of their seemingly neverending rate increases, that they subject us to several times a year, in order to assist them into signing the deal with Bell Media, and to carry those HD channels! I refuse to watch Space, Discovery, Bravo, etc., in "crappy SD"!

We have probably had at least 4 rate increases during the past year.

It's likely Eastlink, Rogers and others are simply waiting for contracts to end, and get renewed. So i'm thinking we won't see Bell HD channels appearing until after they re-sign with BELL . Bell doesn't carry FX Canada so Rogers has some negotiating power. I still think its absurd to even have to negotiate HD carriage, it should be nothing more than an added customer benefit included with the SD channel.

Doesn't Rogers already have a deal with Bell?

IIRC, Cogeco, EastLink, MTS and a whole bunch of small providers are the ones involved with the waste of time trying to get the CRTC involved.
