Ratings for the Sabres game on WGRZ were pretty good, according to Son of The Bronx.

Does anybody know whether CHCH (Channel Zero) had to pay a rights fee to the NBA in order for them to simulcast NBA on ABC on Sundays? Or did they simply sign an agreement with ABC alone? If it was only with ABC, would it be possible for them to sign a similar deal with NBC for Sunday afternoon NHL games without paying a fee to the NHL?

CHCH would have to negotiate those rights with the NBA. I'm guessing no one held these rights (or maybe SUNTV did previously?) so they were picked up cheaply..
CHCH couldn't air hockey. CBC is the OTA national rights holder for the NHL. TSN has the cable package. TSN/TSN2 already show most NBC/NBCSN games anyways.. |

Omni 2 will be showing the Knicks-Raptors game tomorrow night at 7. The commentary will be in Mandarin.

Watching the Leaf game tonight and R Maclean mentions that the 4 HNIC games are available on-line/live streaming, and on digital cable, but no mention of how the games are available OTA, guess it's not worth to mention...

the online live streaming quality is pitiful on a large tv screen. why cant they improve upon this with some bandwidth options. if they're going to continue to buy national rights to these games then capitlaize on it with showing these games to us in their best quality. Just my two cents.

Live online streaming can look bad on the big TV screen, so you will definately see a lower quality picture when it's blown up. It's really designed for laptop and desktop screens. There are technical challenges to getting a HD picture through a small internet pipe in a LIVE broadcast, so compromises have to be made. It's not the same as streaming movies from Netflix or AppleTV. Movies can be encoded and optimized ahead of time, but live TV cannot do this to the same degree, just yet. It's getting better, though.
TSN has been doing a pretty good job with their live streams of sports events. I've been watching curling online the last few weeks and I think the quality looks pretty good on my laptop. Good for us folks who are strictly OTA! |

Lots of NFL on broadcast networks OTA
Weekly MLB baseball on Fox weekends OTA Lots of NCAA basketball and football on US broadcast networks OTA Dozens of NY Yankees games OTA coming from WBBZ Buffalo and WHAM Rochester Grand Slam Tennis semis and finals on CBS OTA Lots of Golf OTA MLS Soccer on CBC OTA Lots of NASCAR and other car racing OTA If you need your fix of Toronto teams like Blue Jays, Leafs, Raptors, Argos, then you need cable. But if you are a casual sports fan OTA has plenty of sports. I watched CFL regular season games and playoffs including the Grey Cup on TSN.ca streaming. Picture quality was good enough and a 32" LCD TV.

TSN.ca also has streams of all their Wednesday night NHL games. As well as all Canada's world junior games and as mentioned earlier CFL and certain curling events. They also put their Sportscentre game highlight clips up each morning. It looks good on my 46".
IMO, cbcsports.ca live stream on Saturday nights isn't quite as good as the stuff from TSN but I haven't spent alot of time watching since usually I'd just watch the Leaf game OTA on Saturday night. The gold standard in online streaming though for me is MLB.tv. They offer 1 free game each day if you don't want to pay and just want to try it out (but be ready for alot of Oakland, KC, Colorado, etc.) The full package does cost ($120/yr) but you get about 80 games/week and the picture quality is flawless on my 46" through both HTPC/PS3. NHL.com has a similar service which is a little wonkier IMO and a little more pricey at about $160/yr.. Of course the catch for MLB and NHL is, certain games are blacked out (in the GTA: Jays, Leafs, any national NHL game on TSN/CBC) but there "may" be ways around that if you are technologically inclined.. and if not all the games are archived blackout-free afterwards anyways. In the GTA, again IMO, it is better value to just buy the package than to put up some monster antenna for WBBZ and their 1 Yankee game each week - you can watch the whole season for $120. |

Yankee games on WBBZ 67 (RF 7) will be in HD.
Hardest Buffalo channel to get though; best chance to snag > Antennacraft Y10713 or Winegard YA 1713.

Worth noting that Omni 2 is showing the final on Sunday 27th May from 10:30am until 2pm.
Free live cricket, fantastic! .... even if it is T20. A great opportunity to have a butchers at the the world's second most popular sport. Enjoy. btw - I think they had a Pune v Punjab game last Saturday as well. |
