@stationg: The D-Link DIR-655 is a pretty nice router, I had mine for 6 years or so until it died recently and I upgraded to an Asus RT-N56U.

The 655 likely has more features than the Shaw modem/router that they provide, however I haven't ever been able to try the SMC modem/router that Shaw tries in the combo mode. I was adamant that the installer set it up into Bridge mode right away.

There's no real downside to using your DIR-655, however I found that my 655 had poor wireless performance. If I used wireless enough I may have tried the WiFi on the Shaw modem/router, so if you use WiFi a lot or have had problems with the 655 you may want to give the Shaw one a try in combo mode. Other than that, if you're familiar with how your 655 works and want to keep it, I say go for it! It's no more or less secure whichever way you chose to go unless you start forwarding ports and stuff.

Default Marketing Communication

I see Shaw have a new marketing honcho, they needed one though his last job doesn’t recommend him to me (a bureaucracy that uses verbose junk-mail and stupid phone calls).
Answers like “we have no schedule” are bureaucratic – a proper answer is “It is hard to predict, but we don’t expect to get to your area for [some time] [at least six months].” or such. “You will be notified of the approximate schedule at least 30 days prior.” would also be very good info. Of course that means that those with perspective on the current schedule progress tell the customer reps such and the reps be capable of communicating.

There may be variables like an unexpected number of TVs, supply of converters, and the proportion of people who need a tech to install the converter (clear communication would reduce that – many people are capable if they knew what was coming and needed to be done), but it should not be chaos.
Note too that people miss notices in the flood of junk mail, and can miss letters when postal deliverers stick them in a free newspaper that is also in the box and the newspaper is discarded without being read. Followup phone calls are very good, including to try to schedule the technician’s visit, and reduce hostility toward technicians as reps of the company. (The whole thing seems naively planned – did they talk to technicians before making the plan?)

Default My Broadband 50 sucks

I just got back from three weeks in Mexico, before I left Shaw 2nd level upped me to Broadband 100 because I was getting dismal upload speeds, It seems there are two BB50 levels out there, phase 1 - 3MB up phase 2 - 5MB up. Friday 2nd level called and left a message that they were going to push phase 2 to my router. Woke up this morning, did numerous speed tests and my up/down speeds are worse than ever, down less that 30MB up the highest I reached was 3.7MB . Guess what, I called my 2nd level and left a message to see what the heck is going on. Oh, and to add to the mix when I run Shaw Speedtest it now tells me I am not a Shaw Internet customer .

I had Concierge Service Tech update my Cisco Router to Modem only and now run through my Dlink DGL-4500 router for all connections.

I just ran speed test at Speedtest.net

I'm in White Rock, BC and and I've been getting 30 odd Mb/s for the longest time. But tonight I'm pinging 50Mb/s. I guess they fixed the problem.

A good question for you all is what are you using for routers / firewall ?

I'm running a retired HP Proliant DL360 G4...
Dual 3.6Ghz Xeon's, 8GB RAM, Dual 74GB SCSI U320 Drives running pfSense 2.1 Beta. Have 4 network ports at my disposal ( 2 onboard and 2 off a PCI card )WAN, LAN, SERVER ( LACP ).

Speed tests are ran on my server as on the wireless network i would drop speed regardless of the 802.11N connection.

Server End - Hardwired w/ LACP

Laptop End - DLink DIR-825 w/ DDWRT Firmware latest release ( bug free ) on fresh reboot

BTW...
It's only running in WAP ( Wireless Access Point ) mode.
No routing or switching is being done by the on board processor.

You guys are aware that many of the servers on speedtest.net are incapable of server 50 or 100 mbps right?

Using speedtest for BB50 and BB100 is like trying to test the top speed of your Ferrari in a cul-de-sac.

I don't think the words "DDWRT" and "bug free" should be that close together for any reason.

has anyone heard from shaw on this?

does anyone happen to have a screen capture of the original info?
I just posted regarding this exact issue- I've emailed the Shaw Resolution Team and I have screenshots showing hard caps set on my cable modem by Shaw's Docsis servers, limiting capacity lower than what's advertised.

Here's my post, with screenshots linked within: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...26#post1438226

What I'm not buying, is that if it takes the BB250 capacity to upgrade to 10 meg up, why is it they can set my connection to 5 meg up for BB100, but it's set to 3 Meg for BB10? It sounds like they're _still_ in the process of upgrading their infrastructure, when they're clearly advertising it otherwise.

Details within the link provided above.

Does anyone here know if West Vancouver is currently seeing 5 MBps upload for BB50? That's what Shaw's website claims when the location is set to West Van. However, just now when I called to ask about upgrading from Extreme, the agent said it was limited to 3 Mbps. Or does it perhaps depend on exactly where in West Van?

I'd be willing to buy the new modem and pay the extra $5 a month to double my upload speed from 2.5 to 5, but not for a measly bump to 3.

It would depend exactly where in West Vancouver. No one outside of Shaw knows exactly which areas have been upgraded to offer the higher upload speeds, so if the agent said you're still at 3 Mbps for BB50, I'd be inclined to believe him.
